Smoking onboard

Oh dear! Didn't mean to cause a storm. I am a non smoker and frequently travel with smokers and therefore find myself in smoking areas or be left out. My lot would not smoke on balconies and didn't like smoking inside, it felt wrong. So we agree a ban on smoking on balconies and inside OB would be ideal. That said, try and get the staff to serve you a drink outside the bar on deck 5 and you will wait all week! Like other cruise lines SB need to provide a sheltered outside spot with bar service that is close ish to the action. SS manage this no problem. I will stand by my previous post, some (not all, to be clear) of the most fun people I have met on cruises are smokers. On my next SB trip in a few weeks I will be travelling sans smokers, but will pass by the smoking area with champers in hand and will no doubt find a fun bunch.

Oh good grief. My post certainly wasn't "us vs. them." It was just a lighthearted post commenting that the language sounded odd. Smokers are just as fun as non-smokers, no argument there. At least we agree.....enough with the smoking!

I have looked (in vain so far) for a sign of an indoor smoking room on the new ships. This is what is needed, and maybe there is time to sort one out if it has not yet been done. Then the smokers could transfer their affections to Encore and the other one. I agree that smoking on the Sky Bar deck should be restricted definitely to one side, and not allowed sitting at the bar.

Lioncub - just read your post. There is already a sheltered spot outdoors to smoke, on all the ships, called the Sky Bar, and at present you can even sit up at the bar and smoke. The Patio Bar opens at 10, and it is not difficult to get yourself a drink there and go up one flight, or the staff I am sure take drinks up until the Sky Bar opens at noon.

I believe Lioncub may have been referring to evenings after dinner. The only bars open are OB where you can smoke indoors (as you've seen my username, I am indeed a smoker) or outside on deck 5. I abhor smoking indoors, and in the case of cruising, on verandas. But I'm afraid Lioncub is right. Deck 5 has no service outside, and the only way to get there is over the dance floor, past the band/guitarist/DJ and out through a small door. Two people behind the bar, one making drinks and the other serving the casino.

I may have misundersood JVNYC's comment, but I thought it was 'lioncub's initial post that inferred it was us vs them situation.

I understood the post you've quoted to be pointing that out. I haven't seen any posts here recently suggesting that smokers are bad or unpleasant people and so it seemed an odd thing for lioncub to post that 'most of the fun people' he/she has met are smokers. I read it and wondered "where on earth did that come from?!". That's why I posted in agreement with JVNYC.

So if I did read it incorrectly, then I should make clear that I don't want a us vs them situation either. I definitely don't discriminate against people for being smokers. in my daily life I no longer have any friends or family who smoke, although several including myself are former smokers. I don't think any of us have become any less fun since we quit - although there may have been a few tough months in the beginning ;)

My view on smoking on Seabourn hasn't changed but I certainly don't think that smokers are in any way 'less than' the rest of us. Perhaps Lioncub will come back and talk about this some more

I think as a non-smoker, Lioncub was only trying to throw a little lighthearted comment in there so as NOT to make it an us v them. I'm a smoker and I agree with most here that smoking on verandas and inside is unacceptable. And I should also point out that lots of non-smokers end up in the smoking area with friends or family who do, and we always have fun. But I thank Lioncub for his/her comments and I'm hoping we'll meet on a cruise in the future. Favourite tipple in hand of course!

The bottom line is if you and your significant other are willing to wager $10,000 plus for a balcony you can't enjoy due to smokers, go for it. If you are willing to not go in the Observation lounge after 8:00pm, go for it!

I and countless others are not willing to bet on a smoke free cruise in spaces we paid dearly for. Until Corporate gets there head out of there a-- , we are cruising on other lines that recognize the smoking issues.

I totally agree with you. Smokers tend to be a lively, chatty fun bunch. There are often nonsmokers like you and me, who will join the smoking section people as that is where a lot of great conversations and laughs are happening.

...and then you get to return to your suite.

Hooray for personalities, wonderful people who also happen to smoke etc

BUT.......

What if your neighbors on either side and above and below are smokers....how is your ambience and environment then?

Proven fact: Smoking is dangerous to your health. Fires at sea are often caused by careless smokers.

Smoke in your own home if you can't kick your addiction but please don't pass along the problen to rest of us with your 2nd hand smoke.

And wise up Seabourn PLEASE!

To all who post "smokers are fun" and "just find a well ventilated space to enjoy their company" type comments, I have 2 problems with that.

1. "The blooming obvious". Smokers are no more or less fun than non-smokers per se -there is no evidence for that whatsoever. Like "fat people are happy" and "blondes have more fun", it is just too glib. Especially in a thread about a serious problem.

2. " The blooming oblivious". What if you have a genuine health issue with other people's smoke? Does that just not occur to some people, smokers or non-smokers? Do smokers just not care about their own cancer risk? Have they never watched a family member, friend or colleague suffer from cancer? I guess if they are reckless enough to ignore their own risk, they can even more easily just close their eyes and ears to the passive smoking evidence. Or they just don't give 2 hoots about other people anyway? I can't really think of anything else a Seabourn customer is allowed to do on the ship that can harm or endanger other customers, except smoking.

I truly have a very real allergy to cigarette smoke. My symptoms are clearly apparent well within a minute. My husband has asthma which again becomes a clear problem in the presence of smoke. In the OB or even near deck areas where someone is smoking, or on our veranda if there is a smoker on theirs nearby, we cannot stay there without becoming unwell. If there is an area of the ship with smokers in our company, close enough to talk to, it is just impossible for it to be to be "well ventilated" enough for us to stick around and not get sick. No matter how smart, how funny, how gorgeous, how kind, how captivating, how whatever their company might be, we have to move on. Believe me, I wish it were otherwise, then not only could I presumably experience the company of a wider group of my fellow cruisers but I could enjoy all of the areas of the ship that I had, after all, paid to use.

Having suffered neighbouring veranda smokers and OB smokers (our favourite bar :() on 2 Seabourn cruises, we now cruise on other lines. We loved Seabourn in so many ways and would very much like to spend our hard-earned there again, but until the policy is altered, we will not.

That's great but how can you breathe in that air (fumes) by choice:confused:

Wouldn't worry chainsmokingalcoholic, can't knock a coconut down with every shy.

Things could be worse. Have just read a thread on another cruise line that mentions one of their ships has been chartered by nudists! Apparently 'nudity is permitted on the pool deck and at all times in the OB (equivalent)'. Could prove a bit more distracting than a bit of ciggy smoke, but one heck of an ice breaker! Apparently the staff like to work these charters on account of the big tips! [emoji12] lol and excuse the pun. The staff do get a choice by the way. Though I'm sure auldlassie would remind us of the dangers of exposure [emoji23] (sorry, couldn't resist) to the sun.

Though, most of the fun people you will meet on a cruise are nudists.......[emoji57] A word of caution, take care if you are both a nudist AND a smoker!!

At least there's no worry about a dress code!

I do hope they clean the seats of the furniture before the next cruise!

I am told by a cruise line friend (and most certainly do not know from personal experience) that it is practice to carry a towel everywhere and sit on that.

I can neither confirm nor deny that is true. But the thought of nudists eating Thomas Keller fried chicken and chain smoking on a Seabourn ship gives me fits of giggles.

Obesity is the number one health issue as well as drinking. Just google the statistics. As a reformed smoker I too don't want to be around second hand smoke. Overweight and morbidly obese people lead to many other leathal diseases that effect the heart, the liver and pancreas.

I thought I posted this but it was either deleted or just did not post. On cruises I just try to to avoid second hand smoke, I don't want to be tempted.

SuiteTravels, you posted it on another thread which was a thread about a specific current breach of Seabourn's smoking policy. I read it and couldn't see why or how it was relevant to that particular thread and replied in kind. Apologies! Perhaps ask Host Dan to remove that other post and he'll also delete my response to you. Peace :D

Sorry two smoking threads. Boy I wish Seabourn would get with the rest of the cruise lines. We would love to try Seabourn as an alternative to Crystal but not until they restrict smoking to a smoking area only such as a lounge that is away from non-smokers.

Host Dan please delete one of my duplicated posts.
