My experience in the Caribbean is that there seems to be far fewer bugs around than here in New England during the summer. The exception to that is the number of flies feasting at the Labadee buffets.

there are no mosquitoes next to the ocean. They need stagnant water to breed among other reasons

As someone who has worked for and is married to a mosquito biologist at the largest, private mosquito control business in the world, not all mosquitoes need stagnant water to hatch. Some mosquitoes lay their eggs in tree bark in the upper Midwest, some prefer mud, and other species prefer salt marshes. Also, don't forget that mosquitoes can breed in containers, old tires, or bird baths. With over 3500 species of mosquitoes in the world, they are found on every continent except Antarctica.

To the op....the Caribbean is experiencing an epidemic of chickengunya disease which is carried by mosquitoes. As for St. Thomas and St. Maarten, there are mosquitoes there and here's a link you might find interesting:

If one takes precautions by using repellent, you should have no problem.
