Anet01 Posted January 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2016 I purchased a Nationwide insurance cruise policy for our trip. Do I have to include the ship excursions in the insured amount? I can't seem to get a definitive answer. We are sailing to Alaska and have some higher priced excursions that would take the insurance cost up significantly. 6rugrats Posted January 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2016 Will you be refunded if you can't make the excursion?
diane.in.ny Posted January 26, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2016 Are you prepaying the excursions? If yes, then I would up my insurance to include them. If you will put the cost on your shipboard account, then no. And btw, if you don't go on an excursion because you are ill on board, I learned that you must see the doctor and have a report from the doctor for the insurance to cover the cost of the excursion. Anet01 Posted January 27, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted January 27, 2016 We prepaid the excursion as wee didnt know if they would be available on the ship, one is a Helicopter ride and dogsled on glacier, which is pricey. They are only refundable if cancelled 2 days prior.
ChucktownSteve Posted January 27, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 27, 2016 Did you read the policy provisions to see if non refundable excursions are covered and what the requirements are for reimbursement? It's not so much what we think but how the claims adjuster interprets their policy and your circumstances. If it's not covered, I'd say don't buy the coverage. If the coverage is acceptable to you and you don't want to self insure, then the additional premium may be worth the peace of mind.
msmayor Posted January 27, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 27, 2016 Double check, but if they are ship-sponsored excursions booked ahead of time and the ship does NOT make the port, the fees are almost always automatically refunded; the 2-day cancellation provision doesn't apply. Privately-booked excursions that are non-refundable should definitely be included.
cherylandtk Posted January 27, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 27, 2016 You should include the cost of all PREPAID, NON-REFUNDABLE trip costs. Your excursions are clearly prepaid, they are not necessarily non-refundable. Since the cruiseline allows you to cancel up to 48 hours prior, your insurance would only cover cancelation in the last 48 hours, and then only for a covered reason (which is primarily an illness requiring the services of a doctor). Anet01 Posted January 29, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted January 29, 2016 Thanks everyone! We booked the excursions through the ship, so we have decided to skip tthe insurance on them, and just insure the cruise.
