ANTHEM of the Seas Troubles

Spare a thought for the staff whom work so hard to provide everyone with the perfect cruise whom will now have to clean up this mess, deal with "emotional" passengers whilst dealing with their own feelings about going through this storm.

 

I hope RCI and the passengers give them their well deserved gratitudes and tips for the entire cruise.

 

Plus I hope they get a chance to call and contact their families back home.

When I was a kid we went through a cyclone on the tiny P&O Himalaya.

Decks were locked, ship was bobbing around like a cork & even walking down the halls holding onto the hand rails was almost impossible.

 

We had a navy ship even smaller than us as an 'escort' - I think we may have been escorting them!

 

Anyhow we all survived & it didn't dent my love of cruising.

 

My take away from the Anthem incident is as someone else said - gives me confidence in the ship builders! :D

I heard an interview on RNZ last night where a passenger said his elderly mother was sitting on the settee in the cabin , the ship dropped suddenly and the next thing she knew was her head hitting the ceiling.:eek:

 

Goodness, hope she is alright.

Yes, big news! And it was front page of Sydney Morning Herald, which even quotes Cruise Critic members in it:

Cheers, it would have been terrifying for them.

I thought it strange that passengers were told to stay in the cabins but some went to the muster stations. And others were going around to see all this.

Those Atlantic storms are horrendous. The Tasman and Bass Strait pale into insignificance compared to what that sea can get up to over there .

When we crossed the Atlantic on the old Canberra we struck 3 hurricanes in 5 days . The waves were breaking over the Crows Nest Lounge and when you tried to walk up the stairs you would take a step expecting to go up 1 , and then suddenly find yourself 3 or 4 steps higher .

Incredible. I have been in some storms and had some huge swells and waves but nothing like that.

I call dramatisation. That is physically impossible. All items accelerate at the same rate, no matter how heavy (ignoring external elements ie air, water). The ship has a maximum acceleration of 9.8ms^2, as would she. The only way she could hit here head on the ceiling was if the ship was under going some other form of acceleration down (for example if the ship was pushing itself down) however since the ship would not of been in free fall, she would of been able to accelerate much quicker then the ship would of been accelerating and therefore she would of stayed on the ground, since the ship is the only thing stopping her from accelerating at 9.8ms^2. So the only way that could of happened was if the ship was pushed or pulled straight down, which obviously didn't happen.

Sorry to rain on your parade but it can indeed happen. Its like a plane hitting turbulence.... as it falls people not buckled up go flying to the roof.. What happens is a wave will pick the ship up in the front , another at the back and then the waves move away leaving the ship sitting in mid air. What happens then? ...it drops suddenly and heavy objects such as a sofa will stay in place . Have you ever heard of oil tankers breaking their backs. Thats how it happens.

Maybe Anthem should adopt one of the Princess slogans..'Come Back Craving for More.!!'

 

I don't think many of the pax would agree with that.

 

Yes The Atlantic is wild, went through Force 11 and 30 foot seas transatlantic on Aurora in September, she handled it well, not as high in the water as Anthem and built for world cruising, big difference.

They happen because there are other accelerations at play. I plane is travelling at high speed and has the engines constantly pulling the aircraft, there are a lot more forces at play in that situation,

On ships when you move slightly off the bed you are not actually moving anywhere, it just feels like you are as the ship was going up before which caused an increased force on you, when the ship gets to the peak of the wave you start to feel like you are lifting off, but in actual fact you aren't, since the ship is now falling the ship doesn't need to hold your entire weight so you start to lift off the couch/bed, as the springs/padding are not subjected to the same force, therefore they start pushing you off them (you can think of it as you becoming heavier and lighter every few seconds). When the ship reaches the peak the force pushing it up no longer there so the ship starts to experience negative acceleration (acceleration down) this acceleration can be no greater then 9.8ms^2 since that is the max acceleration due to gravity, there are no motors pushing the ship down so it all relies on gravity. Since the ship is not falling straight down and still experiences a force from the water the ship would not experience 9.8ms^2 acceleration. In fact it wouldn't even be half that. Since the only thing that is pushing both the ship and the person down is gravity and both objects feel the same acceleration due to gravity, then when one falls the other will fall exactly along with it.

 

Your heavy object thing is completely false, no matter the weight an object will fall at the same rate, unless acted upon by another force. (like how a feather falls slower then a hammer because of wind resistance). In the case of inside a ship where the air is moving with the ship the air resistance can be ignored as the air is moving with the items. Therefore if the change in direction was so sudden that even a feather lifted off the ground, so would a 1 ton cement block.

 

What you're thinking off is the change in force not lifting off the ground. It just feels that way. This can be damaging to a persons back, as it is suddenly placed under a larger force then usual, when this happens over a period of time they eventual get a injured back.
