Changes coming to Onboard Trivia

Spoke with one of the fun squad members aboard the Pride Journey cruises and he told me about some changes that are coming with regards to Trivia.

Apparently, they are going to be giving tablets/ipads to the fun squad that will house an almost endless list of trivia categories and questions.

The staff member will be able to select the category and then will get 20 random questions out of hundreds. This should mean that there will be a lot less question repeats and will allow for new trivia categories to be added.

That's fantastic! Glad to hear this, as I'm tired of hearing the same old questions being asked all the time. Believe it or not, there are people out there that know the answers by heart and are not afraid to walk off the ship with many "ships on a stick" trophies. I've even seen people bring out their old answer sheets from previous cruises so that they can win.

So, yes, I'm all for this change!

I still challenge them about most frequent form of transportation is the elevator. How about walking?

Oh, they have all sorts of questions you could dispute. "What's the easiest way to catch a cold?" Easiest meaning most certain? Well, you could have someone sick sneeze on you and wipe it on your mucous membranes. That would do it. Easiest meaning requiring the least effort on your part? I guess you could lay in bed and have someone sneeze on you. Or do they really mean most common? Dumb question. (They said doorknob, so maybe they meant most common, but who is to say whether that really is the most common?)

I also had one "What was the earth's first satellite?" A-hah! It's a good trick question! They didn't say "first artificial satellite, which everyone knows was Sputnik. They said first satellite, which was the moon! Everyone else will say Sputnik and get it wrong!"

They said the answer was Sputnik. What can you do? They just are reading it off a card, so you can't really make a logical argument with them even if you are right.

Funny story about knowing an answer to trivia. We sailed Rhapsody of the Seas in February 2002. I love trivia so I played every game. One question was, "What color is yak's milk." I got it wrong but learned something new. Fast forward 12 years! We're on Magic, again playing trivia. (We'd played umpteen trivia games on over a dozen cruises since RofS.) One question that came up was, "What color is yak's milk?" I screamed out loud that I knew that! I was the only one who got it right. Who would have believed that a neuron held the answer to that question for 12 years.

We lost the trivia game anyway. :( But we had a blast laughing at the crazy answers. :D

We have ONE Ship on a Stick from each of our 17 Carnival cruises. After we win, we play for fun. We have never won a second nor would we have accepted a second. Why would anyone need more than one?

I'm sitting here at my computer and I count 19 "ships on a stick" that I have brought home from our past cruises. I can guarantee that I have given away more than that! On our last cruise, we were walking back to our cabin after winning the Beatles trivia game and saw this 5-yr old young man telling his parents "you just follow me. I know where we're going". I thought he was so cute that I handed him my SOAS trophy. His eyes lit up so big! Kids are what life is all about!

Ok, what color is it?

This is fantastic news! It is not like there is a finite amount of trivia in the world. It always made me crazy to see people answering before the question because they were on a b2b or somehting. I may never win and I am happy with that, but I want a fair fight!!

What they need to do is limit the people playing together. It is absolutely unfair to allow a table of six people to pool their knowledge/guesses when others are playing solo.

FTR, the daily sports trivia on our Sunshine Journeys (in the sports bar), they used tablets and the questions/answers were displayed on the TVs. I was lucky to get 10 of 20 correct. But there were a couple of guys who would get 18 or 19 or even 20 and have a sudden death question. They knew their sports.

I know my 60s music. I've now won two and that's two more than I need. :p

According to the lady doing the trivia on the Magic last month, she is given zero internet time to do any research relating to the trivia. For instance the "70's music" trivia used a 70's compilation disc, with a few songs that came out in the 60's (Purple Haze) and even a few from the 80's (Tears for Fears?).

The genius trivia (I think that's what they called it) was awesome and we got every one correct. Managed to get my daughter, and her boyfriend, each a SoaS.

I much prefer HAL's trivia - winners there get a dam mug (V-dam from the Volendam, for daughter Victoria) (M-dam from the Maasdam for daughter Melissa) (R-dam from the Ryndam for son Ryan). Now if they'd just have some ships whose names start with T or D.

they tried to tell me Washington had teeth made of wood. I put ivory and they wouldn't acknowledge it as correct. If only I had my GW biographies with me to prove them wrong.

Your experiences remind me of an issue my father had with a particular trivia answer on our first Carnival Pride cruise. My DH wrote about it in his cruise "memoir" here on CC years ago...

(now to see if I can figure out how to cross-quote from a different thread:rolleyes:...)

(apparently, I can't:o. So, I've just cut-and-pasted the relevant chunk of the post below. )

On previous ships, Dad has almost put the host in a headlock while arguing the answer to a trivia question. I remember this one clearly – the trivia question was “What countries participated in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War?” More trivia questions followed. At the end of the questions, we began going over answers. When this answer came up, the host said “the answer is North Vietnam and the United States”. Well, Dad almost busted an artery while disputing this answer.

“I was at that party, and there were more than just those two.” he said to the host.

He wasn’t rude, and didn’t yell, but he was very insistent that the answer was more complex than just these two countries. The host insisted that the answer written on her sheet was “North Vietnam and the United States”.

The argument here is that there were at least 3 countries involved in the Tet Offensive – North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the United States. If you want to argue that North and South Vietnam are two halves of the same country, then the accepted answer shouldn’t say “North Vietnam”, it should just say “Vietnam”.

If anyone reading this happens to be a Vietnam vet – first of all “Thank you”. Dad was an Army grunt from ‘66 to ‘67, 9th Infantry Division.

So, the host awarded him the points, and he won his “vessel on a trestle” trophy. This isn’t the only time that we’ve had issues with trivia games, it just happens to be one that I remember. Wifey’s family is very trivia-competitive, and I just sit back and drink. One of the old stand-by games at the family gatherings is Trivial Pursuit (all editions). You wouldn’t think that Trivial Pursuit is a lively game, but it is in this family.

I always Trivia is like Golf. you are only cheating yourself if you cheat. I did trivia one time and saw people writing the answers down before they even finished reading the question. while there are some questions i could see that happenning on i don't think 20 is that number. i played for fun but no one likes to play a rigged game.

Now if they would just move it out of the Casino Bar to a place where you can hear the answers and not have to inhale second hand smoke.

On my last cruise they moved some of them to the theater. But they had it scheduled for 30mins before bingo...and you couldn't find a seat because the place was full of people waiting to play bingo.

That would be great for B2B cruisers. :)

I went to trivia once.

Some of the questions were unclear.

There were people who got all the answers correct even when the the questions were obscure.

It was a waste of time.

I cannot understand wanting to do the same quiz over and over again.

Kind of like taping Jeopardy, rewatching it and feeling smart because you know the answers.

Like Bill Murray answering the Jeopardy questions in "Groundhog Day".
