Looking for pre-cruise hotel in Sydney

We are cruising in January 2017 out of Sydney and looking for a pre-cruise hotel. Have been doing research both online and here in CC.

DW prefers having a balcony so that is a must. We have found 4 that seem good at what appear to be reasonable prices:

Swissotel Sydney

Rydges World Square

Rydges Sydney Central

Four Points Sheraton Darling Harbour

Can anyone comment on their location for sightseeing, convenience to port, safety, eateries etc? Also open of course to other suggestions if you know of any hotels in preferable area that also have balconies.

Thank you!

We will also be looking for a conveniently located, reasonably priced hotel pre-, between and post-cruises February, March and April 2017. Any and all recommendations genuinely appreciated. We like smaller, friendly hotels and have had really good luck with family owned and operated hotels in Europe.:)

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney in the Rocks for 4 nights in April 2016 prior to our cruise. We were in Sydney last spring and checked out the hotel and liked it. It is only a few hundred feet fairly level ground from Hotel to OPT on day of boarding. Circular Quay shops, ferrys and Opera house are only a 10 minute walk. and there are some great pubs and eateries all around the hotel. Very nice atmosphere at night and we felt very safe walking around.

We saw that. Beautiful building. Unfortunately, no balconies. We are leaning towards the Rocks area for the views.

Are you leaving from the OPT at Circular Quay or White Bay? If the former I would look for hotels around the Rocks. If not, it makes little difference as you will probably use a taxi.

Gosh...don't know.:o How do I find out where each of our cruises will dock?

Our go to when embarking.

Plus on a Sunday Mrs Gut loves The Rocks Markets.

We frequently stay at the Grace in York Street, nit small but vey friendly, a 1800s department store re furnished to a hotel. Centrally located to shops and transport and at a pretty Goid price. Don't think you will get much in the Family Owned and Operated category in the CBD area.

We have recently used The York Hotel (Swiss-Belhotel) and found the deluxe two bedroom apartment excellent in appointments, convenience and value for money in this expensive area. The short walk to the cruise terminal is downhill and easily managed.

Appreciate the responses but appears another poster with totally different requirements got this off our original request.

Not many in Sydney with balconies that I can think of. Traffic noise and exhaust fumes can be issues with those that do.

World Sqare is pretty central.

Darling harbour isn't as central but is a better location in terms if view and quiet.

Swissotel would be my pick from those you name.

What about one right on the harbour. Pier one a the rocks has some nice rooms but again not as close to transport.

We have stayed there. Its not that old.

It was built Art Deco style 1930's. Rooms are large and spacious.Handy location..:)

You are right.

They started trading 1880s but built that building 1920s.

The superior room is good being a bit larger again we stay there about once a month.

Mrs Gut does some consulting work and that's where they put her up.

We have stayed at Four Points by Sheraton at Darling Harbour. Lovely hotel some rooms have balcony overlooking the water at Darling Harbour. Plenty to do there and lots of restaurants. Also you are close enough to catch a ferry around to Circular Quay where you could widen your travels. Hope this helped.

We looked at Pier One but rooms start at $800 us per night. Beautiful hotel. Swissotel would be my choice also but DW is pushing for balcony with water view. Battle I won't even attempt to win. Lol

Looks like Four Points may win out here. Water view with balcony and still there at cbd. Hasn't been getting very good reviews due to a massive overhaul but sounds like should be completed well before we get there.

Keep checking Pier 1 snagged one the other day for $390. But Jan is peak season.

Good hotel but Hotel is undergoing major renovations. Check when these finish. Higher Darling Harbour view rooms better. Quickest taxi access to White Bay cruise terminal.

Lots to do around hotel such as Aquarium and attached Wildlife park, National Maritime Museum, hundreds of restaurants at all levels, downtown shopping a short walk as is Queen Victoria Building. Nightly fireworks also at Darling Hbr.

Many harbour cruises also leave from Darling Harbour.

Unlikely to get a view from city central hotels.
