Va. Plumber Posted March 11, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2016 Why do cruise lines ask for state of residence? Has anyone ever gotten a discount based on that? Perhaps they don't want too many passengers from one state in the same lifeboat?
LrgPizza Posted March 11, 2016 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2016 I think it's market research to see where they want to home port ships. (I'm totally kidding, by the way. They'd need to transplant an ocean first to be near me.)
avidcruiser35 Posted March 11, 2016 #3 Share Posted March 11, 2016 I haven't gotten any discounts but it states that In some cases there could be discounts but not sure what qualifies fir a discount

Kdiamond55 Posted March 11, 2016 #6 Share Posted March 11, 2016 I've gotten a discount before, but I live in Florida so I think the resident discounts would probably only be for people who live near ports.
Rare www3traveler Posted March 11, 2016 #7 Share Posted March 11, 2016 I have gotten several discounts mostly on Caribbean cruises not Alaskan and I live in the state of Washington. It is a marketing tool.
rvsullivan Posted March 11, 2016 #8 Share Posted March 11, 2016 Sure!!! Just got an offer of discounts for Caribbean cruises for Texas residents. Didn't have anything I wanted, but it was like 5% off.
Rare Denversail Posted March 11, 2016 #9 Share Posted March 11, 2016 I got a huge discount on an Alaska cruise last year for being a Colorado resident.
bruadhin Posted March 11, 2016 #10 Share Posted March 11, 2016 Because sometimes there really are special state resident rates. Rare, but they do exist. Carnival use to really promote cruises from New Orleans to Tennessee and had special rates for Tennessee. It wasn't fantastic, but it was lower than the current rate available to everyone else. djmess Posted March 11, 2016 #11 Share Posted March 11, 2016 Probably about 5 years ago I was supposed to go on a RCCL or Princess (I really don't remember which line) Alaska cruise. I was living in NC, but worked in VA. I was dating a gentlemen in VA and he asked about possibly going on the cruise with us. So I began checking out prices. Bottom line is they were giving a VA resident discount, which amounted to about $500 off the cruise price per person. We ended up breaking up, so never followed through on rebooking the cabin with him in it. We were planning on doing a cruise/land package. But the story doesn't end there. I kept checking rates and the VA resident rate was always lower than the NC rate. I called the cruise line and said I lived in NC, but worked in VA. They absolutely would not budge on adjusting the rate. So we cancelled the 4 cabins we had booked at the time. I was disappointed in not getting the Alaska trip at the time, but a few years later, I did an amazing trip with NCL and my child was a little older, so I think it all worked out for the best! buckeyefrank Posted March 11, 2016 #12 Share Posted March 11, 2016 We received over $800 off of our carnival cruise last year for being an Ohio resident.
evandbob Posted March 11, 2016 #13 Share Posted March 11, 2016 I've gotten a NY resident discount twice on the Celebrity Summit southern itinerary out of San Juan. The best discounts I've received have been special casino fares plus cash back on Carnival.
