New to NCL, more than 1 entree at dinner?

We are booked for our first NCL cruise May 1st. All other cruises have been with Carnival. At the complimentary restaurants are you allowed to order more than 1 entree, app or desert if you want? With Carnival you can order as many as you like and they are all included. Is it the same on NCL? Thanks!

In the complimentary restaurants like the MDRs, absolutely!

In the specialty restaurants that are fixed price, absolutely!

In the specialty restaurants that are a la carte, you pay per dish. Most dining plans (SDP) limit you to one entree, but allow for multiple apps/sides/desserts.

If I recall correctly from the fine print for the SDP, there's a $10 upcharge in Cagney's or Le Bistro if you order a second entree.

But I've definitely seen someone order a second entree in one of the main dining rooms and it was delivered with no fuss. :)

Correct. Snip from NCL.com dining FAQ's:

"Additional entrée charges also apply for dining at Cagney’s Steakhouse and Le Bistro."

I think by now on most ships the only specialties that are still fixed price are Moderno and Teppanyaki. Moderno is all you can eat, but you don't order multiple entrées, they just keep refilling your plate. At Teppanyaki you cannot order unlimited quantities of meat, as far as I know (the last time I only asked for extra noodles and they said no :().

Entertainment dining is also fixed price, and I have no idea if you can order multiple anything there.

They no longer say it's $10. I suspect that means that they will now charge the full à la carte price for additional entrées (which is more than $10, sometimes a lot more). Edited by hawkeyetlse

I almost always order more than one in MDR simply because it's tough to choose and I want to try both. Never had a problem. I also often order more than 1 appetizer and desert. It's really not about quantity of the food so much as it is about variety.

In saying 'they said no' I would assume you're referring to the chef. Did the restaurant manager agree? In my opinion that chef overstepped his/her bounds. If the manager agreed, I might mention the incident to the Food and Beverage manager. It creates a big 'what?' In my mind. Extra noodles??

Wow... Seriously?

I haven't had that problem. I think it might be how he asked. You can order whatever meats, fish, and noodles you want off the menu. I had the Lobster, Filet Mignon, Scallops, and Udon Noodles, but ordering it was confusing for the waiter. They’re not used to going off-script, but I think I can offer a solution. Find a menu item to base your dinner on. For me, it was the seafood Teppanyaki classic combination: Lobster, sea scallops, and calamari. Then I told the waiter to hold the calamari, and add filet mignon and udon noodles. That worked better than trying to make up a new combination “out of thin air.”

At Teppanyaki on Escape, prior to taking our order the server volunteered that we could order whatever and as much as we wanted. I was going to get lobster and filet combo, but when she said that, I added shrimp, too. I thought I'd get smaller portions of each, but I got the same amounts as those that only ordered 2 of the items. It was a ton of food!

It wasn't the chef. The chef doesn't normally appear until after everyone has placed their orders, and I would not order anything from the chef (that's not his job).

Anyway, it certainly was not an incident, but I did find it strange. And I don't know how it could be "the way I asked", because what's wrong with "And could I have noodles with that?" I had already ordered off-menu (filet + lobster), but when I asked for the noodles the server explained that only certain menu options came with noodles. And she was not offering to bring me one of those options on top of what I had ordered, she was telling me I would have to take one of those noodle options instead of what I actually wanted. I guess I could have pressed the issue, but I didn't need the noodles that badly. :)

Anyway, I later had udon noodles at the noodle bar and they were awful, possibly the worst thing I've tasted on NCL…

What are uDon noodles

Chewy and soft, these thick wheat noodles are best when you can find them fresh. Dried udon is still good, but the texture is more dense. Udon has a neutral flavor, so they make a good choice for strongly-flavored dishes.

It will be interesting to hear recent experiences.

I asked about multiple appetizers and desserts just this past week when speaking with an NCL cruise specialist. I was told in complementary restaurants one can order as many items as they want from any category . I was told that in specialty restaurants you are entitled to one complete meal which includes only one appetizer and one dessert and not multiples and of course one entrée . Sides were not mentioned . Any thing about one entrée or one dessert would carry a fee . The Ala cart restaurant speaks for itself as things are priced individually.

I mentioned that this seemed a lot different than the last time we were on the ship because we could order multiple appetizers or desserts in Cagneys . And I was told , yes there have been changes ...and he reiterated the above again . So we will see...
