Have you ever seen the Captains Stateroom?

Since the Chief and Staff Chief's office was way down on deck 3, while our staterooms were on 10, I managed to find one of the $15k espresso makers that was "down for repair" and install it in the deck office behind the bridge (Chief Officer, First Officer, Environmental Officer and Captain's Secretary), so we could have a good cup of coffee for the daily meeting in the Captain's office.

Love it!

I've seen coffee makers 'behind the bridge' on a few ships. Why not? It isn't asking too much, the bridge can have a decent cup of fresh coffee when they wish. JMO... :)

I remember a Captain's wife who couldn't get a Christmas Tree for their cabin. She was so fortunate someone 'found' one for her. :D

And I will neither confirm nor deny that there might have been another coffee maker "permanently" in the electrician's shop, just across the ship from our office. :D

A couple of years ago we sailed on the Prinsendam and we had the original Master give a presentation and do a Q&A session. He indicated that because he was present during the buildout, the Captain's quarter were the finest of any ship. Having never seen one in person, I had to take him at his word.

Nice story, but the panels for the cabins are fabricated long in advance, based on the original design, and very little even a Captain could do about it.

We were sailing Zaandam when now retired Captain Halle Gunderson was aboard observing as he had just joined HAL. He was Captain of Prinsendam when she was with Royal Viking and was going to take command of her again but now for HAL.

My late DH and I were asked if we cared to have dinner with him and, of course, we were delighted. We had an amazing evening, the three of us when he was sailing 'out of uniform' and just before he went to Prinsendam. A wonderful gentleman.

KODM.... four large suites immediately the bridge. The four senior officers, Captain, Staff Captain, Hotel Manager and Chief Engineer.

Their accommodation is roughly 10% large than the Neptune Suites on 7 Deck. Longer but the same width and large balconies... same.

On the old Nw AMSTERDAM there was a party in the Captain's cabin. One of the girls said, "Captain, what kind of sheets do you have one your bed?" He smiled and said, "Same as everyone else. Plain old white." One guy sitting quietly said, "No. They are pink satin!" Well, immediately everyone decided to parade into the captain sleep quarters.... there they were and say them, PINK SATIN! Believe me, you have never seen a captain so red faced. It was all a gag. We know what we were up to and the Hotel Manager had the steward change the sheets before the captain escorted us up to his cabin. Two days in Vancouver we stayed at the pier to see the ship sail that afternoon. There it was again... that pink satin sheet waving off the Boat Deck.

All in good fun.

That is hilarious

After the Star Princess fire, SOLAS was amended so that the balcony furnishings either had to be of the "low flame spread" materials, or the ship had to install fire detection systems out there. Sprinklers are also required if the furnishings do not meet the SOLAS requirements.

Not to take this off topic, but what does that mean for the lovely (combustible) teak steamer lounges?

They are very nice indeed. His day room is gorgeous with an office for computer, etc. The room is large enough to host all the suites for the suite party which is what he does :). I was told it is the largest and nicest anywhere. His suite is even larger and nicer ;)

Cup of coffee is no problem on that ship since his day room is across from the Neptune lounge - Often saw Captain Gundersen and Captain Andre there !

If they are not treated with fire retardant, then the balcony must have a fire detection and/or fire suppression system installed.

Most things that folks take for granted on shore have to be treated with fire retardant when used on ships. Even live Christmas trees. I had to personally check the certification of every tree every year when they came onboard.
