Is the casino open on the ships while you are docked in Bermuda?

This was a big brouhaha a few years ago as Bermuda tried to change this policy. Since it is a money maker for the cruise lines, several threaten to quit sailing there. Bermuda finally gave in and allowed it to continue. It is the only place I am aware of that allows this.

This has been in debate with the government of Bermuda for some time and it is correct that it is now allowed, but it is my understanding that the ships must pay a fee to have their casino's open and all cruise lines with itineraries there may not have opted to do so. Your ship's casino may or may not be open as a result. Were were there on a 1 day port of call itinerary last summer and the casino was not open. Perhaps on the longer 2-3 day port of call itineraries it would be.

To my knowledge it never was allowed as there are no casinos in Bermuda. As with any port of call on US based itineraries that I am familiar with the casinos are always closed in port and in our experience that has also been the case with Bermuda. The new policy as I understand it was enacted to allow ships the option to open with a fee to Bermuda as many ships typically are in port over at least one night.

Thanks. I'm thinking on booking the Breakaway in September and it's in Bermuda for 3 days. I had heard the government was thinking about changing the rules last time I checked. So, wanted to make sure I could still do some gambling.

We were there in 2014 on the NCL Dawn and the casino was open between 9 pm and closed early morning (can't remember the exact time).

To my knowledge it was not previously allowed. My understanding is that over recent years it was debated and dropped then re-debated and finally approved last year or so. There was a lot of push back initially as there are no casinos on the island and some residents resisted it. (I guess even though it would be isolated to the ships they are in Bermudian "soil" while docked). There also was concern for a loss of revenue if passengers spent money in the ship's casino that could have been spend on land. That is what I was told led to the fee to assure some revenue sharing. Not sure how the fee is calculated but I don't think it is a percentage as that would be difficult to monitor. I think it is a calculated fee per ship per visit.
