PompeySailor Posted May 30, 2016 #28 Share Posted May 30, 2016 I am sorry, but its not allowed to show anything related about smoking (even ash tray) in my country TV or cinema. Its also not allowed to smoke in public places, like school garden, hospital garden, even open area parks. RC are not governed by your country, I was starting to get worried there for a minute. Cruisingthesuitelife Posted May 30, 2016 #30 Share Posted May 30, 2016 Just came out of the same showing. They didn't look like real cigarettes. What I do find odd is that them 'smoking' caused such offence but you are seemingly ok with the swearing, gesticulating, references to teen pregnancy etc. The show was outstanding, the cast superb and the only thing that hacked me off were the many guests who decided it was appropriate to talk loudly, have cell phones ringing and generally cause ongoing disturbances throughout the entire performance. You clearly know Grease and were aware of the themes that run through the show. Why should the show should be adapted from the way it was written? As you said, it references a time where things were different and therefore to alter it would mean it is no longer keeping with the time in which it is set. Rather than view this so negatively if you are that concerned, use it as an example to teach your children that things were different 40+ years ago and that the show represented accurately life for teenagers in that time. Explain that now it would be portrayed differently as people are aware of the dangers of smoking.

Its also not allowed to smoke in public places, like school garden, hospital garden, even open area parks. Part of traveling means you are exposed to other things. Everything can't be like where you are from. And if that bothers you then you shouldn't travel. And even if they don't show it on tv there I'm sure your kids have seen worse in movies and on the Internet.
Diamond659 Posted May 30, 2016 Author #32 Share Posted May 30, 2016 And you as a parent could just as easily explain that smoking is bad. Changing it to a non smoking version changes the whole show. Why do some parents feel that they should never have to explain things to their kids, you know, actually parent them? I believe non-smoking version will not change anything on the show. You do not be "rebel" only by smoking. And if you really believe that smoking is the main topic of this show, this means i am right about complaining. Its not suitable for a cruise ship. What will happen next? Creating a show from a porn movie? (Our children will see it anyway from web, night time tv, etc., so its not problem)
champagne123 Posted May 30, 2016 #33 Share Posted May 30, 2016 Popcorn = Smoking . Really? I hope your daughter will not smoke in future and not die from breast cancer and you will not see it. Because popcorn does not kill but smoking KILLS. Smoking does not cause breast cancer...now that does not mean you cannot be diagnosed with breast cancer if you are a smoker.....but it does not "cause" it. I see in your last statement you say that you are young. Most of us (at least myself) are old fogies and have children/grandchildren. Just a piece of advice for when/if you ever have children. If you protect them from all of the evils of the world, you will never be able to teach them right from wrong. This goes for smoking, drugs, alcohol, sex, on and on. I think that is all we are trying to say. :)

Ocean Dancer Posted May 30, 2016 #35 Share Posted May 30, 2016 To the OP: So you think that if kids see people smoking, they will become smokers? If they see adults drinking on that same cruise, they will become alcoholics? If they see you take an aspirin, they will become drug addicts? If they have ever seen a video game or a TV, they will become killers? And since they are on a cruise, they may become a porter, a room steward, a waiter, a pizza maker, a tour guide........don't forget to let them see the Captain!! I don't see your point. Sounds like a grand time. When I was in high school many years ago, we were right near a religious private school. These kids were super sheltered and not allowed to do or be exposed to anything by their parents. Guess which kids got in the most trouble? The kids from the private school where their parents tried to keep them in a bubble and the kids rebelled.
Overtyme Posted May 30, 2016 #39 Share Posted May 30, 2016 I am now on the maiden voyage of Harmony Of The Seas and just seen the show Grease. I am very much suprised that Royalcaribben sold this show to tobacco companies and created it like a smoking advertisement for teenagers. Several times (i counted more than 6) players are smoking real cigarette on the stage and showing this as a nature of being adult. Here in Europe, its mostly forbidden to advertise tobacco material. But i see that big tobacco companies found their way of advertesing in Europe by entering to cruise ship shows where all age groups are able to see it. In my opinion, these scenes are easily can be adapted to a non-smoking version, but its very clear that company did not want it, or did not care about it. So, the managers and workers of RCCL is free to tell their children that its a normal habit to smoke, but i strongly advice everybody to keep their children away of this show if you do not want them to be a smoker in future and live long. And just another question of this situation, is it allowed to smoke on Royal Theater? Sounds a bit dramatic, but maybe not? Was your comment about selling advertising space confirmed or validated? The original movie and show were very much in line with what you were saying. The times were marked by an era of being cool. Smoking was associated with cool people. It's only in somewhat recent years that it's beeb publicly frowned upon as unhealthy and unfashionable. I've never been a smoker, and I want to be clear that this is not a judgement about personal preference as much as it is a response to the OP about why smoking was made glamorous in the show Grease. Are you sure those were real cigarettes and not just props that gave off smoke? Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

Before this thread gets locked, I needed to address this. There is an increased risk of breast cancer from smoking. You cannot NOT link the two. I am a breast cancer survivor (non-smoker) but everything I have ever heard is that there is definitely a link, plus the sites I read before posting this reply would confirm same. Are you sure those were real cigarettes and not just props that gave off smoke? I mentioned on the first page that they are probably e-cigs, which look VERY real up close, let alone sitting in an audience. :) . Just be sure that cancer is not a joke and really kills or even worst you live with cancer and every day beg to die. BYE So overdramatic. You may also want to tell the cruise lines to stop selling alcohol. Nearly 100,000 people die each year just in the US from drinking. And that doesn't count people killed in car accidents from a drunk driver. I hope you cover your kids eyes so they don't see people drinking because if they see it in sure they will become an alcoholic. Gambling is a horrible habit too. Don't let them near the casino. It's a triple whammy with smokers, drinkers and gamblers.
Yorkvillain Posted May 30, 2016 #43 Share Posted May 30, 2016 OP, you should take the kids to see Book of Mormon. That show is much more milder than Grease.
KansasK Posted May 30, 2016 #44 Share Posted May 30, 2016 I grew up when smoking was the norm. I loved to read as a child and as a teen and the main characters always lit up. Characters in movies smoked then. I never smoked. I taught my children not to smoke and set the example by sitting in non-smoking, when there was non-smoking, and setting the example by not smoking. I know they made their own decision about smoking. Seeing Grease would not have started them smoking. That being said, maybe this is not a show for children. BeachChik Posted May 30, 2016 #46 Share Posted May 30, 2016 And btw I grew up in a house where both my parents smoked and my grandmother that lived with us smoked. My grandmother died from smoking related issues. I have three siblings and not one of us smoked ever. Being exposed to something doesn't mean you will do it. And in fact being exposed to it made me know it was something I never wanted to do. So I along with I'm sure many others understand the seriousness of smoking however that doesn't change the fact that your original post is ridiculous. It is your job to tell your kids right from wrong regardless of what they see others doing.

Cruisingthesuitelife Posted May 30, 2016 #48 Share Posted May 30, 2016 I am not a smoking supporter. I have never and will never smoke. However, it is entirely different when portrayed as part of a story. If you were against things being portrayed in fiction, heck even non-fiction, then nobody would ever go anywhere, do anything or see anything!
