flageek Posted June 6, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 6, 2016 Be very careful when using Carnival Magic (maybe other ships also) ATM machines!!! I used a Carnival Magic ATM back in early May while on a 7-day cruise. The ATM said "unable to dispense funds". However my card was charged!! I disputed that with my bank; they investigated; and received a response from Cardtronics that said the money had been dispensed. I don't know who received the money, but it certainly wasn't me!!! So we won't be using any Carnival ATMs anytime soon!! If you use the ATM's, be very, very careful!!!

Carnival would have to give the bank the video and I don't see that happening. If they even still have the video. Security cameras are all set up with different timing in that after a certain number of days they automatically erase.

NCTribeFan Posted June 7, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 7, 2016 It isn't a scam. Good grief, people. Most (if not all) free-standing ATMs are privately owned. Companies have them installed as a convenience to their customers. I worked somewhere that had a couple. I had to refill them and there were times that bills would show as having been dispensed, but they somehow didn't feed out and fell down inside the machine. OP should've immediately gone to the service desk and asked to have whomever serviced the machine open it up and check to see if the bills were in there. I never, ever use those machines. Escaping Cruiser Posted June 7, 2016 #14 Share Posted June 7, 2016 This happened to my brother at a local casino in Maryland. He was able to recover his $, but it took several phone calls and letters. It was a few months before he saw a credit to his account. One thing that helped was a receipt from that ATM that tracked the transaction. It showed a withdrawal, but when the machine was serviced it showed an overage against the transactions. Hope this helps.
sweetsixteencruisers Posted June 7, 2016 #15 Share Posted June 7, 2016 I (we) never use an ATM that is not my bank. I don't trust any of those free standing ones. I bring plenty of cash with me. Plus I hate that they charge you to take out your own money. Sorry this happened, Good Luck!

sc4125 Posted June 7, 2016 #17 Share Posted June 7, 2016 I have used the ATM machines on a couple of CCL ships. They are like all ATM's - sometimes things go wrong. This happened to me at an ATM at my bank - the machine was obviously out of $$. I went inside and had someone check it for me - they saw it was out and re-filled it. So, I don't believe CCL is running a scam or that Cardtronics is running a scam - things happen when you're dealing with a machine. Using an ATM is a convenience for me - sometimes I spend more than I think I will (gasp!!!). The trick is making sure that you take care of any problems as soon as they arise. I do wish the OP the best of luck & hope you get it taken care of. I can understand how this happened and maybe you didn't know you should report it right away - I feel for you - keep on trying. TerReuv Posted June 7, 2016 #18 Share Posted June 7, 2016 So ATM's never make mistakes on land? How is it a scam? Doesn't the ATM give receipts? Did the receipt you get say the cash was dispensed? The receipt would also show your ATM charge. Why would you not immediately go to GS to let them know you used it but didn't receive any money. CYA. Terrible title for a post when it is clearly not a scam.

I would not call it a "scam", and I would not consider it "Carnival's" fault either, as much as I dislike Carnival. ATM is owned by a banking company, and although staff of Carnival might have the ability to load it, they don't manage it. ATM's can malfunction, and it appears this is the case. I personally will never use a free standing machine and will only seek out one attached to a bank but on a ship, you really don't have a choice. I hope this gets resolved for you. At first I thought why would the poster have not dealt with this immediately. After reading it again I see the message was "unable to dispense funds". If I got that message I would assume the transaction did not go through. But then I am one of those old fashioned people who keeps receipts, so I would have some evidence my account should not have been charged. That has happened to me on occasion at my bank atm, a message saying unable to dispense funds, but I have never been charged or had to dispute that I didn't receive the funds. I just assumed the machine was out of funds or malfunctioning. Certainly not a scam, Carnival has more creative ways to scam us out of our money, lol. seventhwardhustler Posted June 7, 2016 #22 Share Posted June 7, 2016 Really why use an atm on a ship? on my first cruise, i was very young and naiive. my paycheck came the day AFTER the ship sailed (7 days) so i just figured i would just get my cash for the trip from the ATM on the ship. i happily go to the ATM and it was OUT OF CASH the morning of the second day! i had a couple of hundred on me but that didn't last 7 days. spent the latter part of the the trip borrowing! sigh. now i know better. and, to answer your question, lots of folk use it. Port of Tampa Posted June 7, 2016 #23 Share Posted June 7, 2016 Oh great the ATM was my one sure slot machine that paid out for me in the casino...guess I'll pack more cash. Thanks for the heads-up. Cheers and happy cruising.
loubetti Posted June 7, 2016 #24 Share Posted June 7, 2016 Any proper ATM should disable itself when out of cash, and indicate "out of service" on the screen. I know the ones at TD Bank do that. When I worked at Home Depot, we had the self-checkout kiosks, and when one ran out of cash the screen would indicate "credit cards only". Of course, that didn't stop one bozo from using his CC and then wanting cash back! I had even told him before hand, but he thought there was another stash of cash in there!
flageek Posted June 7, 2016 Author #25 Share Posted June 7, 2016 yep. i'd NEVER had this happen to me before so threw the receipt away-oops... used ATM because long line at cashier's cage...oops... just got off phone with BNY Mellon rep - discussed time discrepancy on listing she provided me from CardTronics, esp since i could prove some time issues....she said they often (!?!?!) get disputes where ATM machine literally spits out money minutes after ATM has been used, and customer has already walked away from machine...wth?? anyway...good lessons learned here...always keep receipts, and be very careful using ATMs... good news is BNY is contacting my card issuer and expects situation to be resolved in my favor...
