Whale? More like a tail off a jumbo jet that crashed on the upper deck.

 

I was thinking more when Carnival started with MARDI GRAS, CARNIVALE and FESTIVALE. The white 'C' was on the ship BEFORE Carnival bought these ships. The funnel was two tones of GREEN with a large thicker white 'C'. Carnival made the C thinner and the greens changed to red and blue. It has worked since they started. Do you think Carnival would change those colour and shapes? No way!

 

What about Cunard and Costa?

I first cruised on HAL in my late 20's back when the officers were Dutch and the crew was Indonesian- cruise staff was as I recall mixed British and American. Still remember the small inside cabins with fixed twin beds or even upper and lower beds in some. Rotterdam had two inside cabins next to what were then considered suites that each had a double bed- loved those. I think one of them was cabin 185.

 

Took many years off from regular cruising (cruised off and on a few on various lines and wasn't impressed) and just started back in seriously in 2013 and now just over 60 still love HAL and am 3 star. Sure the ships have changed but the feeling I get from the officers and crew is the same gracious warm welcome I remember back in 1980 stepping onto SS Rotterdam. Sure there isn't a Dutch woman with tulips to greet me at the gangway or a steward in white gloves to escort me to my stateroom but the smiles and warmth are still there.

 

I don't miss having to eat at the same time at the same table with the same people every night. Never did care for the MDR crowds and noise even back then- really happy the PG exists now.

 

HAL has and always will have a special place in my heart. Special enough that we chose HAL for our wedding and honeymoon. Our PCC has gone from the person we book with to someone that almost feels like family.

 

So unless I see bumper cars and drunken conga lines I'm here to stay :)

No, I haven't sailed on Crystal, but am willing to take a look at them. The difficulty is the increase in price. I understand that they are not significantly more expensive in the higher level cabins, but I usually book the "foul ball" cabins (low & inside), so the price difference is typically greater.

I did try Oceania, but found they were about 4 times the price, and not as good as HAL in many important areas (service, food, entertainment, shore excursions).

 

I have also looked at Seabourn (not for me), and plan to take a harder look at Saga. They do sound promising.

 

I switched to Crystal many years ago and never looked back. In their windowed cabins with 25% single supplement, its actually cheaper than HAL or Celebrity. I just booked Alaska on Serenity in a window cabin for less than a balcony on Celebrity, yes I loose the balcony but gain so much more!
