How much do you tip?

First cruise, we gave the room steward $40 extra, and the head waiter $20 extra (the room steward gave us better service).

On our second cruise, we gave the room steward $40 extra this time around as well, as he also gave us superior service. We had YTD for dinner, and never had the same waiters, so we didn't give any extra tips beyond the standard ones.

Been asked a couple of times but I still don't see an answer... Why on Earth would anyone ever remove the gratuities? Do you not tip the waiter when you go out to dinner or the bellhop that carries your luggage? I would assume that removing them would indicate to Carnival that you considered your service to be unacceptable.

If Carnival goes to 1x a day service I'll remove them and dole out cash to who I want in the amount I want. I won't punish waiters for the room steward, and vice versa, but they'll get what I think is acceptable (which is usually above the prescribed amounts historically) and none of it will filter through Carnival accounting first because 1x a day service, to me, is not acceptable. if someone else is happy with that, good for them. But not for me. Cash in hand for services rendered. If service is great, they will be thrilled with me. If they do less, they get less. If they get less from enough people the employees can deal with their employers who are setting up a bad system. Just like in the rest of tipping societies. More service = more money. Less service = less money.

I am willing to bet it has nothing to do with the level of service but rather there is a certain portion of the population that are cheap (aka mooch). So you get a family of 4, the gratuity bill for the week comes out to roughly $360. The see that on their printout and the "moochiness" trait kicks in and it's right down to the GS desk to get those charges removed. Some may try to justify their actions by putting a $20 bill in an envelope and leaving it for the room steward and waiter. Those type of people are flat out pathetic

Some people are like that. It's sad, but not everyone does things the right way. You just have to accept it and act accordingly for yourself.

Auto tips stay on my bill and I will probably go thru an extra $500 in additional tips for a week long cruise

It matters to me. If they are charged everyday then I know not to go have them removed until the last night. The lines are longer but don't mind the wait as I'm platinum, I can use that line.

If they are charged day 2 then I can go at my leisure on day 3 when lines aren't that long and have them removed.;)

Why would you remove the tips the staff rely on them as part of their wages

In Sept. I will be paying almost 13.00/day prepaid gratuities...on 7 days, times approximately 3,000 people, that's approximately 275,000.00 given for tips....not sure how it is divided but some staff are salaried....As far as giving exta tip to room steward....can I ask....does anyone tip their cleaning lady if they stay in a hotel for more than 1 night? Probably not...I generally NEVER ask for ANYTHING from my room steward on the ship...last one NEVER even emptied the garbage? So I don't think so...If I do tip extra....IT WILL BE TO A BAR TENDER.....that's where it makes a difference...for me anyways....

We always tip at hotels

I don't remove them and never have regardless of what I posted earlier to Miss Denise. I have always tipped extra except for 1 cruise but certainly not to the level of some of these posters.

I asked a simple question in post 45 and got what I took to be a response that was a little condescending, so I posted that as a smart arse answer to her condescending reply, which made me no better than the person I was responding to.:(

What a should have said when I responded was that it matters to me which day the gratuities because when I answer questions on here I like to answer with correct information.

My apologies to the CC members.:o

So, if some of you don't see your room steward frequently but the beds are made, the towels/washcloths are new each day and your towel animal is waiting for your return each evening, you feel as though he/she has not done a good job?

The steward I don't see is the one who does the best job in my opinion. Do the service with no impact to me. What more can I ask for?

I do! But only the Room Stewards Part....Why because on my last two cruises,

I became Friends with my RS:)...So I pull his portion and add extra to make sure he gets his Cash now!!....The rest I leave on..because its easier!!!.......But I am suspicious about this new add on for Service Support or what ever they call it!!!

Is it proper to tip separately the Entertainment Bands (Filipino Bands) that usually play outside the casino? They are all very good and was just wondering if that is allowed. Thanks for the info.

Not only do they get a full salary, you are already tipping them from the $2 from every person in your party, as well as everyone on the ship each day.

But you can certainly double tip them if you like.

I know I prefer to not have the interaction. If all that is done and I don't have to be buddies with the steward that sounds awesome to me. My hubby and I are a little on the anti-social side, haha. I think it's sad when people don't tip well just because the steward didn't get all chummy with them.

We always prepay our tips and also tip additional. When we meet the room steward we give him $20 with a simple request to please fill our cooler with ice instead of the ice bucket. If he has done so all week, we tip him an additional $20 plus at the end. We always request the same wait staff at dinner ( we do anytime dining) and tip them at the last dinner. We tip the servers, and the folks at the coffee shop and the guy who makes our pizza in the middle of the night, as we go. Good service is always rewarded. The folks who are trying to make our vacation a good one, deserve a tip,

What does salary have to do with deciding to tip someone? I am glad you have the poster the permission to tip if they wanted. They can now sleep soundly.

Did they tell you that if you take their portion of the tip off and you hand them cash, they have to turn that cash in so it can be distributed evenly? Did they also tell you if you take their portion

of the tip off, they are called in and questioned as to why the customer removed the tip? You are not doing them any favors by removing tip, give them extra and leave grat. on the bill.

We used to tip more than recommended amounts, but with rising gratuities we just leave service charge as is.

I prefer all cash tipping, but with automated charge I wish they just included it in the fare.
