Goldenpaw Posted October 12, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2016 We're on the Royal for 20 days, embarking on Dec 10. We want to do something for our cabin steward on Christmas, but I'm a bit baffled as to what might be appropriate. Is cash in a Christmas card acceptable? Perhaps an edible treat we've picked up in a port? What do others do? Sent from my iPad using Forums

Goldenpaw Posted October 12, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted October 12, 2016 So, cash it is. Basing this on our experience that our room stewards on every cruise so far have been from the Philippines, a mostly Catholic country. yuccaman Posted October 13, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 13, 2016 Ca$h. The rest is crap. Sorry. Everyone who thinks they are being cute by giving little gifts? They're wasting their time. This is a behind the scenes comment, too, not rumor.

Thrak Posted October 13, 2016 #11 Share Posted October 13, 2016 Crew quarters are tiny. There is no room for a lot of "stuff". There is always room for cash.
medsed Posted October 13, 2016 #12 Share Posted October 13, 2016 If a crew member gets a Christmas gift of cash does it go into the tip pool? I have been told that tips are turned over and aggregated, are gifts and tips the same thing?
cb at sea Posted October 13, 2016 #13 Share Posted October 13, 2016 If you hand someone CASH, you can be guaranteed it will go in their pocket. No worries! Cash is the best gift! Do you work? Do you want a knick nack or money? Well, they prefer money, too! Give them a bit of extra cash. It will NOT go into a "pool"...I guarantee it! Lucky TGO Posted October 13, 2016 #14 Share Posted October 13, 2016 I know CASH is the way to go. But I have a question will he or she have to turn it $$$$$ in and shear it with the crew. I HOPE NOT!!!! Tony

OnVacation11 Posted October 14, 2016 #16 Share Posted October 14, 2016 On my past Christmas cruises I have given a card with cash in it and a bag of Christmas M&Ms and I am planning on doing it again this year. I have never had my room steward refuse it :)
partybarbie Posted October 14, 2016 #17 Share Posted October 14, 2016 On one Christmas cruise, the Captain's Circle Hostess remarked that she was sad she wouldn't have time to leave the ship as she had a craving for a particular candy. I found the candy and bought it for her. She seemed to like it. We've also given bottles of wine to our waiter, asst. waiter, and cabin steward. These gifts were in addition to the cash though. :)

So next day we bought some more. Obviously, candy does not need to be stored... they got their usual extra tips at the end of the cruise too. Sometimes when they can't go ashore... something like this is welcomed.

Yes, you always see the some of the crew at the local grocery stores, stocking up on the things one can't get on the ship. :)
