iPhone vs laptop

Hey gang,

 

I've seem topics based around wifi but never really encountered a thread that spoke to the basics, so here goes:

 

For years I've taken my laptop to connect to the ships wifi. Occasionally I have to check in with my home business. With the functionality of today's iPhones however I'm thinking of leaving the laptop at home and using just the phone. Here's where Princess Internet 101 will be helpful. So I have my iphone in airport mode to avoid cellular charges, how do I connect to the ships wifi and use my Elite minutes? Open a browser and access princess@sea? Or what. I know this may sound remedial but I may not be alone in this techno-ignorancy.

You can leave it in airplane mode, but separately turn on wifi.

 

I do this all the time on SW airlines flights.

Turn on airplane mode

 

Turn on Wifi

 

Open Safari and log into Princess@Sea to start your internet minute usage.

 

The moment you are done sign off from the timer webpage to stop your usage.

 

You're all done.

 

Unless you need a physical keyboard to type an extensive amount I agree a laptop isn't necessary if you can accomplish what you need on the iPhone.

Hi,

Been using only my iPhone for the last few cruises.

Leave iPhone in Airplane mode

-but-

Turn Wifi on either by sweeping up from the bottom of the screen or by going into Settings - Wi-Fi: if W-iFi isn't already on (green) sweep left on the radio switch to turn it on. Princess should show up under Wi-Fi.

Select Princess, wait a few seconds, then follow onscreen prompts.

Don't forget to log out when your finished with your session just like on your laptop.

The Internet Cafe host can help you if you have a problem.

I've left my tablet or laptop home for years and just used my iPhone. I now use it for all my photos as well and leave my camera at home. My iPhone take better photos. :)

Although the larger screens on the 4.7" and 5.5" iPhones make it pretty easy to do work on a cruise, I still find that the "sweet spot" for me is my 9.7 iPad.

We use our Iphones when walking about the ship and our tablets when we just want to sit somewhere and relax. Both work great.

iPhone is great if you are in port, and have service. I worry about "sea day" charges. That's when the ship's wifi is useful. You aren't paying for expensive cellular plan minutes.

My vote goes for the iPhone and yes it takes good pictures. But I take my iPad Pro too.

When you log out you should get a screen showing time used for the last login and time remaining.

Test it out if you'll be doing a lot of typing.

If you're uncomfortable typing it out on the phone, can bring a keyboard. DD does this on her class trips.

My iPad mini does the trick for me for on-ship use--games, books, email. I do use my iPhone for photography just because it's easier to transport.
