Security onboard princess cruises

In over 50 cruises along all different cruiselines, the only time I saw an incident requiring quick action by security was on Princess. There was a young man that was obviously drunk and lost a lot of money in the casino. As rumor would have it (from the captain's circle host), when he realized what he had done, he tried to jump over the railing from an upper floor surrounding the Piazza. They quickly tackled him to the floor and put up a sheet to keep all this from view of other passengers....which made sense.

They put up a sheet? Did he die?

Don't be lulled into a false sense of security just because you're on a cruise ship. I'm not saying to be paranoid, but take the same common sense precautions you would on land. Princess doesn't check anyone's criminal history and will allow anyone to book. Everything you can imagine has occurred on cruise ships (and the lines have a history of 'covering things up'). Plus, as has been stated, if anything does happen you're in a jurisdictional 'minefield'.

While I usually agree with the things Pam in CA posts, I'd take "Less likely to see physical or sexual assault on a Princess ship than other lines." with a big chunk of sodium chloride.

They did put a sheet up against the railing and to cover the glass barrier. I guess he was injured and bleeding when taken down from the railing ....but he didn't die. He was also quite combative ... just happened to be out there when they tackled him and saw them putting the sheet over the railing so keep it from view of the other passengers. They responded appropriately, from what I could tell.

I was on that cruise. That was the story that I had heard too. The security team was very professional.

I think it was a cruise not much before Christmas on the Crown ... 7 nights out of LA down to Mexico. The casino was absolutely wild on that cruise ... so many rowdy and younger people in there playing at the craps table. It was so loud and crowded every night, we didn't tend to stay in there for very long. Was that the same cruise ... maybe about 2 or 3 years ago??

We usually go on longer cruises so this one stands out as being outside the norm of the cruises we usually sail on with Princess. But, it actually was a very fun and memorable cruise ... great weather, service, entertainment and that special luncheon they had for the Princess employees that worked out of Santa Clarita ... and the carolers they had onboard before sail away. I really enjoyed myself ... much more than that man that spent way too much money, I am sure.

Thanks everyone, it's good to know they have decent security. I had tried searching on security, but most the threads were about sneaking liquor onboard or people smoking on their balcony and ships personnel doing nothing about it.

Most likely, the cruise lines aren't going to post specifics about how they run their security details. Just general info in cruise contracts about those who are causing problems could be taken off the ship at the first possible port.

There is a member of cruise critic (I don't know if he continues to post) who after retiring from his police officer job, started working for his favorite cruise line as an on board security officer. He gets to travel all over the world while helping to keep the passengers safe.

Im wondering about security at sea and what princess provides.

I know most of us are civilized people, but with an all inclusive beverage package (I'm not a tea totaler, I enjoy a drink or 2)there is potential for both physical as well as sexual assault to take place among other crimes when 3000 people get together.

Does princess cruises have security personnel? Is there a brig on the ship?

I've heard they have plenty of video cameras to document this for legal proceedings. Has anyone seen any security action take on their cruise?

I would hope that if someone gets beaten by another passenger or their wife/ daughter gets their you know what grabbed, that the person caught doing this spends the rest of their cruise in the brig and handed over to authorities upon their return.

You might find attacks and riots on Carnival, but Princess is a different bird. (Google brawls and fights on Carnival). You might want to google rape and attacks on Princess and see what you find. I'm not afraid nor ever been afraid of sexual attacks on Princess or drunk people out of control. I rarely see security on Princess, but then again I'm not looking for them.

Google hardly lends itself to scientific research methodology... especially when you change more than one variable. However, I did what you suggested and in the first link that comes up re: Princess -

"Princess Cruises Captain Pleads Guilty to Sex Crime Against Girl on..."

:(

It was like a car crash ...you don't want to look but then it gets the better of you. Yuk....she was a mere child ...that is disgusting!!

For those who suggest that Princess is insulated from a criminal element, think again. I recall a purser from Sapphire Princess being arrested in Ketchikan a few years ago and had to appear in the Federal Court there.

I also recall a time when somebody's kid fell off the railing and into the water in San Pedro, a wild family traveling together during Thanksgiving around 10 years ago, and if that isn't criminally negligent behavior, what is? I love Princess just as much as most on this board, but Princess is not immune to the problems that exist in the non cruising world.

drinking Package or not, anybody could react badly to alcohol and act up even if having only two drinks. I recall many complaining about a horribly rowdy crowd on the Crown Princess 9 years ago and how out of control, things were and how security had to be called, and last year on the Emerald Princess 5 day out of Galveston the ship was overrun with spring breakers (around 900) who all had a drink package thrown as an incentive to book the cruise, nearly ruining the cruise for many others onboard, so this behavior is not necessarily limited to Carnival. Very strange.

All I will say is that I've stayed in hotels all my life and few I did have concerns;) and if things got bad I suppose I could go to the police or get in my car and leave. On a long cruise we don't have that, we give up our control to a degree and leaving the U.S. And being in international waters, the laws that apply are not as clear to us new to cruising.

40 plus years of cruising on many cruise lines, the majority on Princess, and no issues.

You worry too much.

Just so you know OP, security also has firearms onboard against real bad guys. Under lock and key of course. And given cruise lines routinely offer military/LEO discount, you can assume more than a few passengers are current and ex vets and LEO. Feel better now?

As stated in an earlier response, you won't find details of any security operation on any ship readily available. You may get a personal observation here or there but nobody, even here on CC have any idea how security works onboard. And thats a good thing.

Yep. And since the implementation of the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Security), the ship's security plan, the outline or required responsibilities of which can be gleaned from reading the code, but the specifics for each company and each ship are controlled documents, and even the crew don't know all aspects of the security plan, only their assigned duties. Typically, the only ones onboard who know the full Security plan would be the Captain, Staff Captain, and Senior Security Officer. All others can only offer anecdotal comments.

I actually was on that cruise (unless there's more than one incidents). It was the holiday cruise to Hawaii on the Island Princess 2005/06. Not during Thanksgiving and not in San Pedro, but the day before we returned, and that was in Ensenada.

It was an extended family that became notorious on the sailing for the behavior of the parents and the kids. And they had apparently been on the exact same cruise (same itinerary, same time of year) the year before -- they were definitely the talk of that roll call.

*The parents didn't supervise their kids but spent as much time in the casino (when it was open...it was closed during any time in Hawaiian waters).

*the kids ran around at all hours of the day...including running up and down passenger cabin halls, knocking on doors. One even ran into a friend from my roll call, causing her to spill her drink.

*when my 8-year-old was in the pool, one of the boys hit her in the face. My hubby, who was of course watching her, witnessed this. The boy went into the hot tub and my hubby went up to him and started lecturing him....and the boy responded with "No hablo Ingles." Since not one adult nor older sibling showed up at that point to find out why the kid was being sternly talked to by a stranger, we had to think that no one was supervising him.

*at our meet and greet, one of the youth security persons (this was something new apparently with Princess that year, and many of us think it as these monster kids and the complaints they caused, created this new job) told us that he had found one of the parents of these kids and said he (or the other parents in the group) needed to supervise their kids....and this guy actually said, "we're on vacation." the Youth security guy responded, "You're never on vacation from being a parent."

*one parent had approached another new friend from the roll call and said they wanted to switch cabins with my friend's family. My friend, who I know was so ecstatic at being able to book that cabin, said no. From then on, this woman, armed with a stroller, proceeded to block my friend whenever she could.

*after the cruise, some on the roll call said they have heard stories about how these parents treated waitstaff (with incredibly complicated requests that others in the same area felt neglected) badly and with disrespect. Some stories too about cabin stewards. don't know about the veracity, but have also heard they dropped a lot of money in the casino, which would explain the ship's staff from ignoring this behavior. the friend who had her drink spilled on her, did speak to the captain at the most travelled luncheon and got the feeling that these passengers were given leeway due to $$$.

This is what I heard happened on the last day of the cruise (from a tablemate at dinner who said he witnessed it): one of the parents was wheeling the stroller down the gangway, along with some of the kids and her baby/toddler in her hand (why it wasn't in the stroller, who knows). She was also juggling her cabin card, apparently trying to put it in her purse at that time. Too many things she was dealing with. Oops, the little one falls over the gangway into the water. apparently one of the kids dives into the water to save the sibling.

and yes, it made it in the events page of that infamous site that lists cruising accidents. and I imagine was the talk at just about every table at dinner that night.

from what I understand, this family was on one more Princess cruise, and then may have been banned after that -- I know that many on the 2004 cruise complained in writing, and that I wasn't the only one on my cruise who sent a letter to Santa Clarita.

I believe that we were on this cruise as well as we had the same exact experience, and I doubt that it is such a common occurrence! I can't remember off hand what cruise it was, but we had heard that he was really drunk and swiped his card in the self service folio machine and freaked out about the amount of money that he owed on the printout. Apparently he was a little "suicidal." It was an "exciting" show! LOL!

Happy Cruising!
