winged wheel Posted December 31, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 31, 2016 Recently had a stopover in San Juan, PR. While walking down the front street with DW was approached by a white American type touristy looking guy. About 6', early fifties and claims to be from Wisconsin-which may be true. Dressed like he was on vacation. Anyway, he asked us if we spoke English, when we said we did, he went into this long sob story about he and his father being mugged and he needed $6 to catch a cab to rejoin his father at the hospital. Seemed like an oddly specific amount and his story just didn't seem credible so we lied and said we only had credit cards,Sorry and walked off. Didn't think much else about it until a few minutes later when my wife called a friend of ours who was keeping an eye on our place. It just happened that our friend had been on a cruise with a SJ stop last year. The wife mentioned this guy to him and he said the same dude had scammed him out of $20, with the promise to mail it to him, of course. Pure scammer.

Rare Lionesss Posted December 31, 2016 #3 Share Posted December 31, 2016 I remember reading about this and getting updates for a couple years. WOW Wonder how much a taxi ride costs to get to the hospital. (just kidding) You would think he would come up with a new line already. Safe travels. akcruz Posted December 31, 2016 #4 Share Posted December 31, 2016 Same guy has been there for years. Do a search and you can see many commenting on him being there. We saw him at least 5 years ago. Good to have the reminder. Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk

inahaze Posted January 4, 2017 #8 Share Posted January 4, 2017 Thank you for posting your experience. Many are first-time cruisers or this may be their first time in San Juan. I appreciate the information so that we can all be aware of our surroundings. It is sad that someone would take advantage of the tourists. They are bringing so many legitimate opportunities to the area (jobs, etc.).

ramja96 Posted January 18, 2017 #11 Share Posted January 18, 2017 Sounds almost like running into this guy is sort of a right of passage for the San Juan tourist. jryan110 Posted January 19, 2017 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2017 I'll be there in April. Think he'd be offended if I asked him for an autograph or to pose with me for a selfie?! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
