Breakaway Highlights, 1/2/17-1/15/17

Thirteen nights, this was our longest cruise so far.

We booked on a Wednesday and sailed on Monday. It was a price I couldn't refuse and we had the time.

I'm not going to do a detailed review, just some highlights.

Third time on the Breakaway, first two times in a Haven spa suite.

Our rooms, it was just me and my wife but because there was no single supplement we booked a balcony and an inside. Yup, we had two rooms and it saved a bunch of money. We stayed in the balcony of course and it was perfect.

Entertainment, Wow . . so much better than the 7 day cruises we've been on. Loved all the comedians. There was a comedian, a juggling comedian, a magician comedian, a ventriloquist comedian and folk singing Irish comedian.

A hypnotist and a Broadway singer.

We skipped burn the floor and rock of ages, seen them both a couple of times.

And of course all the music around the ship, Les Getrex, Charlie, Manny, New Generation . . . .

Food, we ate in Manhattan, taste, and savor. Had some good experiences and one or two had some hiccups.

LaCucina was my favorite, ate outside while leaving Tortola.

Cagneys was also good, ate outside while docked in Puerto Rico. Always enjoy their veal chop.

LeBistro which used to be my favorite was just ok. The service and atmosphere were good but the menu limited. I couldn't believe the duck is now a duck patty. . . I ordered the veal . . . We did have a great Duck Ala'ronge in the MDR though.

The buffet was fine for what it was.

O'Sheans was pretty good. Had the ribs one night.

Margaritaville was a let down. Ordered the nachos, a burger and fish and chips. They wanted to bring it all at once but the nachos were huge and going to take some time to eat (they were also soggy). So when my burger came it was dry and the roll was hard. The fish and chips were hot.

The staff were all friendly and helpful.

All in all we had a great time and meet some nice people.

Can you explain the reason for booking two cabins by me again?

Can you explain the reason for booking two cabins by me again?

The inside was a much lower price than the balcony. So at the suggestion of our PCC we booked one of each. Normally when one person books a room you pay double, but that was being waved to fill cabins.

I'm confused too.

My first guess was due to snoring.

Since they didn't have a single supplement it sounds like, the inside rate is lower than the balcony rate so book one in each would be cheaper since they probably wanted a balcony room.

My husband and I have actually also done that before. Assume we want to be in a balcony. Assume the balcony price is 1250 pp. and assume the inside price is 550. pp (as it is now on one Breakaway NY sailing...). If there is a single supplement, booking two cabins when you only need one is ridiculous. But if the single supplement is being waived, we would pay 1800 total to book both (1250 in balcony and 550 for inside) and stay in the balcony. If we booked both of us in the balcony, it would cost 2500 (1250 each). So, booking two rooms saves 700.00.....

any idea if the haven had upsells available.

and how does the common man find out the double charge is being waived. is it on the ncl page? or do u need pcc. this is very interesting way to save money

It was listed on the NCL page but I didn't notice it till my PCC pointed it out.

I have never noticed it before.

Got it, thanks for the clarification.

Nope, didn't see the supplement waived. I'll be looking out for it.

Dont just look for the little icon. Actually run the price for single. Sometimes it is not "waived" but it is still only 100 or 150. more rather than double, and in those instances, it is cheaper to do the two room plan.

Our Cruise Critic meet and greet had the best turn out of all I've gone to. There must have been 100 people there.

That's why I'm surprised no one else has done a review. The only other post I've seen about this sailing is how people got bronchitis.

I was on the same cruise. First time on NCL after several on RCL and a couple on HAL. This was by far the biggest ship my my DH and I have ever been on. After reading a few negative reviews, I was a little worried about some of the regular complaints (Smoke, disembarkation, food etc..) but my husband and I had a great time and would do it again.

The food was better than expected but we weren't wowed by La Cucina (mainly a sub-par chicken dish and a server who may have been new to Italian restaurants) and thought the server at The Noodle bar must have been having an awful day to be so curt and unsmiling. All outside areas were packed on sea days (hard to find a nice place to sit as we were packed like sardines) and the smoke smell did keep us from spending much time at Maltings and the Casino but aside from that- WOW. NCL handled the crowds very well and the staff were smiling, courteous, helpful and hard-working.

Food ranged from good to great, and we never waited more than 10 minutes at any venue. Sometimes the wait for bar service was longer, but not because anyone was standing around. Servers also wandered the crowds everywhere on the ship.

I'd read complaints about buffet crowding and food variety, but if you walked to areas away from the exits, there were always tables and very few lines. The food selection may have been similar every day, but there were so many different things to choose from and the staff were swift to clean tables and replenish supplies.

We also had no trouble getting into any of the free shows we wanted to see, although it was often standing room only in the main theater. Great entertainment everywhere you turned. Never a dull moment... and don't let crowds keep you from the "Dancing With the Breakaway Stars" in the Atrium. I think I got the best laughs of the cruise there- and there were many!

Disembarkation was quick and easy with self-assist. Even at 7:30 am the line was LONG but once it started moving, were were off the ship quickly.

Now I'm battling a crippling case of PCD, but I'm glad I gave NCL a try. We'll be back!

when booking 2 rooms for 2 people, was there any problem issuing a 2nd room key for the room you actually stayed in

were there any red flags sent up when the inside room wasnt being used?

No problem at all getting the second key.

We did visit the inside room daily. It became our routine to stop there after breakfast and check out the towel animal that Dorothy left. Maybe use the bathroom.

We met our room Stewart (Dorothy) there the first day and explained she would have very little to do with that cabin.

My wife did plan to use it if the seas got too rough as it was low and in the center of the ship. But even with 16+ foot waves one day didn't need it.

As for red flags that's kind of funny. Because I felt like we did something wrong having two rooms, but really we didn't. Booking like that was at the suggestion of our PCC.

at this exact moment for BA rates for one person:

march 19 inside is 824 and balc is 1199. so if my math is right, thats over 300 savings if you book 2 rooms for 2 people.

apr 2 is 999 for studio and 1558 for balcony.
