Cassino for dummies? Help!

Hi All,

I'm going in the Epic in June and I would love to try out a few slots and games for fun. However, I've never actually been in a cassino other then passing by during past cruises and I have no clue how to play those games [emoji12]

Is there a website you would recommend to give me a head start? Do the slots have instructions about how to use them? So many buttons!!!

Thanks in advance!

Let me google that for you :p

http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/how-to-play-slot-machines.htm

The short version is that you put your money in the machine, choose how much to wager, and "spin" the wheel. If you get objects that line up for a win (the winning combinations are shown on the machine) then you win, if not then you lose. Whenever you are done, you can just hit a button and the machine will either pay out money directly (pretty rare but some casinos do this) in coins or you will get money added to a card or a ticket that you turn in at the cashier for money. On the ships, the money you put in is linked to your room card (which is linked to your credit card) or the money is from a special casino card (also linked to your credit card).

However, all casinos I have been to (admittedly never been to one on a ship) have someone who can teach you how to play and they will usually give you free stuff too. Try it out, some people love it, others hate it.... slots in particular is pure chance but that can still be fun. Do make sure you set yourself a hard limit (if I lose XXXX money then I am leaving) and also remember that the games are designed for the house, the casino, to win... so your chances of winning are not 50/50, in most cases you have a significant disadvantage to win.

Slots are pretty much what you see is what you get. Push a button and win or lose. Table games take some time to learn. I would recommend just watching people play. You will get a handle on how the games work from that, And also the dealers will help you understand the games as you as play as well. If you want excitement and the best odds against the house. Play craps.

when you see people at a casino on tv there is all this weird stuff going on like - raise, show, bluff etc....

That doesn't happen normally casinos - well, it doesn't in the ones I have been in! (unless you have signed up to a tournament - which you wont be!)

If you are playing poker for example you have your own two cards, and the 3 cards that the dealer turns over on the table. The idea being the 5 cards will make up a good hand - ie 3 of a kind, 5 cards that are all same suit.... etc However, you only have to beat what the dealer has to be a winner.

I think its a lot less complicated than the tv and poker tournaments make it look - and yes its good fun.

So long as you set your limit on how much you want to lose - and keep in mind you WILL lose....!

I personally don't like the machines - they are very addictive and hypnotic - and its much more fun at a table where you can chat to people

slots have terrible payouts. i avoid them. the only way to win big is to play every line, max bet. that easily turns a penny machine into $2 per spin.

blackjack has the best odds of all table games, other than craps. this is assuming you know how to play which many people sadly do not.

what i suggest is picking one game, learning it, and really honing your skills. then you will make money.

also, a game like Roulette is easy - place a bet on a number or color or group of numbers.

I had this same problem the first time I decided to play in the casino. I noticed on embarkation day, there were gaming lessons in the casino. There was no wagering going on, just lessons. Just check the daily.

Seems to be an anti-gambling slant to these responses. everyone spends their $ the way they want. Some buy booze, some eat in the upscale restaurants, some rent cabanas on the islands and...some people gamble. I have been lucky in the ship casinos. I hit $1000.00 two cruises in a row on Wheel of Fortune. Do I go in planning on winning, certainly not but it can and does happen. To each their own!!! To the OP, try it, enjoy it and good luck!

I generally take $500.00, figuring that I will lose it in the slots. Not much into table games. I figure I can afford to spend $100.00 a night for a few hours of entertainment.

If you do win a jackpot, cash out, walk around, go to the bathroom, have a drink or something to eat ( most times there is a nice little buffet set up late in the evening), but do not keep playing. The machines will ultimately win out. I just wish I could follow my own advice!

As has been said, there is not a big learning curve when it comes to the slot machines. Don't worry you'll know if you win big and so will everyone else in the casino. The machines have a big flashing light and a siren to alert everyone in the place. Alas, I don't think I have ever set it off.

Way back in 1985 I was planning for my first trip to Las Vegas. Not having the internet I went to the library to learn everything I could about Las Vegas and gambling. I figured slots would be easy and cheap.

After much research I learned Blackjack is the way to go. Even though the bets can be a lot cheaper on the slots your money still goes faster than playing Blackjack. I highly recommend you learn basic strategy and give Blackjack a try.

Practice for free online and when you play for real you will look like and old pro. One bit of advice, unless you are card counting never vary from basic strategy. IOW don't go with your gut feeling.

Here is a great site that will teach you all you need to know about Blackjack and gambling in general. https://wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/

If Blackjack seems too intimidating just play the pass line on craps. For the most part your money will last way longer than slots or Blackjack.

My husband and I had the same thought on our Dawn cruise two weeks ago. We sat down and each put $20 in a penny slot machine. The second time I pushed the button, I won $83, so I cashed out. My husband was up $12 after five minutes, so he cashed out. Thus ended our gambling career! But we had a fun few minutes... I hope you are as successful!! :)

Try downloading a few apps to play on your phone. There are general casino apps with different games,or ones that are just slots, blackjack, poker etc. You'll get the hang of it no time. The biggest thing is learning when to hit and when not to in blackjack, because going against the norm can get you some nasty looks from others at your table. :o

how do you make $100 last all night on a slot? I blow $100 in about 10 minutes on slots (hence, why i avoid them).

Everything said above. I'm a casino rookie. Never won any money to speak of until I followed that basic slot rule. And the rest is just solid advice.

We have a rule that when we win something worth cashing out, we stop, cash out, and go put the voucher in our safe. Works MOST of the time. :-)

oh, and if you observe blackjack, observe a $50 or $25 table. usually, but not always, people on those tables know how to play. the $6 tables are full of hacks that hit on break cards and dont understand splits and doubles (which is where the real money is won).

I have found with the way the CAS system works, if you happen to get a tax form ($1200 win or higher), you are best to put that money away and just continue with your normal budget. From our past experience, this maximizes the way the system works.

Slots are the best if you don't want to gamble much. I never spend more than $20 at a time (usually $20 is all I'll spend in the casino for the whole trip) and you just can't play table games for that. Even at a low minimum table you are betting at least $2 a hand and in vegas I've seen minimums up to $15-$20 a hand.

For low budget gaming go with the penny slots. Just be careful! It's easy not to realize how much you are betting. We usually do max lines (20-30 usually) and minimum bid per line which makes it $.20-$.30 per pull. But last time I was there I accidentally sat down at a $.02 machine so that doubled the bet, without me even realizing. Max bet will have you running through dollars per spin.

Simpliest way if looking at lines and bids are the lines increases your chance of winning, your bid increases your payout. So if u bet $.01 per line and win a 7x combination on line 5. You get $.07 back (but you probably bet .20 on the spin to cover 20 lines). However, if you had bet .20 per line for just one line and won a 7x combination on line 5. You get nothing. But if it was on the one line you bet you'd be walking away with $1.40. Fair enough, this isn't as exciting as a $2 spin where you win $100.... but it'll also make ur money last a longer. 10 bad spins in a row at $2 eats up your $20. But at $.20 per spin u r only down $2 and it's just time to move on to another machine or get another drink while ur friend takes a turn.

To make it last I usually go with someone else and we take turns playing and watching. We each put a $20 in, play a machine till we are down $2-$3 and then move on to another. Otherwise you can go through $20 in 10 minutes!
