If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

I wonder if NCL ever looked into having specific cruises be 100% non-smoking? If they did:

1. Would you book one?

2. Would you be willing to pay a premium to book a cruise that was 100% smoke-free?

1. yes I would

2. no I would not pay extra

You actually hit on the key component of non smoking casinos and ship....

The growing non-smoker demographic

While a ship doesn't need to be totally non smoking I believe the casino needs to be non smoking

And because the crew seems to smoke and their cultural demographic does not seem to be cutting back on smoking.....the simple solution is.....

Bring more ships to the Asian market....which ncl is doing

Put smoking crew on those ships

Going forward....and this will take time....as crew rotate out of other ships...just replace them with non smoking crew....

This will more than likely require ncl to tap other geographic markets to hire their crew...but there will always be non smokers in the world looking to work on a ship...

You will just see less Asian crew and more crew from other areas

Not sure that will work. The growing area for crew recruitment is Eastern Europe and the former Soviet bloc. Smoking is still quite prevalent there.

NCL is not going to go totally smoke-free - they would be restricting their potential market by at least 17% of US pax - more so in Europe and the far east.

I am a smoker. I can live with restricted smoking areas; non smoking casinos etc. (I just sailed on Azamara which had one small outside area on the ship for smoking - it was party central BTW - we had a blast!)

I do feel that an inside area (cigar bar) should be provided - if only for the time when the outside decks are closed due to bad weather. If that is provided then a non smoking casino is no biggie IMHO (it actually saves me money!)

Well, there's a reason not to let it go! If cruise lines do monitor CC, they must be getting the feedback that there are considerably more arguments and support for further reduction in smoking areas on cruise ships than for maintaining the status quo. The reports of the smoke drifting from the open casino on the larger NCL ships has certainly put me off ever booking a cruise on one of them, and I suspect I am not alone. Other cruise lines such as Celebrity and P and O manage to have smoke free interior areas of their ships, no sign of them going out of business.

So any CC members who would like to enjoy, at minimum, a smoke free casino, and maybe even a smoke free cruise - what a heavenly idea!- please keep posting your comments. NCL, are you listening?

Pretty sure they can figure out from your "yes I would book a non Smoking cruise" that you prefer to be in a smoke free environment. Just not certain why everyone feels the need to be so angry and bitter and both sides of the fence. It's just a survey to gauge interest. Not a debate to convince the world that smoking is bad or (on the flip side) that the smokers are the "cool kids" and have more fun.

Former heavy smoker here. The only person that will convince smokers to quit is themselves. So being hateful and bitter and arguing just seems fruitless. A simple yes or no answer will tell NCL that you are pro non-smoking. No need to be angry for a cause all the time. We all know smoking is bad. If there are enough yes answers the cruise lines may consider giving it a go. Being angry won't. That only hurts the person that holds the anger.

I cruise to gamble-so I would not book a cruise with a no smoking allowed casino or a cruise without a casino. I think NCL would lose a ton of business/money with a no smoking casino.

However that being said-let them invest in a better air filtration system and maybe there would be less complaints.

I am totally pro non-smoking in all public venues (hotels, restaurants, airplanes already on board) for health and safety reasons. Having said that, I am a former smoker who understands that some people will continue to choose to smoke regardless. If cruise lines like NCL want to appeal to the broadest market, they need to step it up in designing or retrofitting casinos and some nice lounges that not only isolate the second-hand smoke (now known to be the most hazardous) from non-smoking areas but also protect the smokers themselves from the same. Upgrade the smoke eaters and ventilation , offer two completely separate rooms, not just areas, for casino patrons, and give smokers at least one indoor bar that they can smoke in peace. :halo:

Im surprised by the people who seem so offended by the suggestion that smoking is bad for them and others. Or that opposition to smoke is the problem of the non-smoker who should just put up with it or go away.

I read a stat that reported 20 million Americans died of smoking since 1964, 2.5 million from second hand smoke. You'd have to be pretty stubborn to not believe its a deadly, nasty, offensive habit that is harmful to you and everyone around you.

The original question was fair. It wasn't about what you'd do if the hand of God came down and willed all cruise ships to be smoke free. It simply asked if people would consider a smoke-free cruise if so offered and if they'd pay a premium for it. It's a fair question.

Twenty two pages, must mean the topic is getting its share of interest. NCL should look into a better ventilation system. Brand new ships, like the Breakaway & Getaway have horrible exhaust systems. Smoke rises and goes all over the ship. There has to be a better system to contain & exhaust all the smoke. I hope NCL is looking at this topic.

No but the slobs that are fighting over the fried chicken at the buffet line spilling all their grease all over the floor causing people to fall and crack their heads open can cause death.

Try again.

If that is your opinion of cruise line buffets I'm surprised you still cruise

I've never experienced anything like you describe

What time did you see this?

What ship?

Did the crew clean up the grease and chicken bones promptly?

What happened when you reported this dangerous behavior to the buffet manager?

I honestly don't understand why they haven't addressed this issue yet and figured out a viable solution

I know that I've changed my future cruising plans. After I use my cruise next certs and get my kids on a mega ship because they would enjoy the lido deck stuff....

Then it's....X

Note to ncl: my 3 well employed well educated young adults and my 1 teen do not smoke and will never smoke....however they love cruising...and they all plan to continue...they plan to have families too...so you will lose their $$$$ unless you fix this smoke issue

Oh and as for me and spouse...well the tuitions are almost done....and we are not exactly low income types...so our $$$$ are leaving you too. We have been cruising you the last few years because we found an acceptable level of ports/price/dates/convenience (NYC) but we are open to other lines and will be cruising them in the best future

Oh and none of my kids friends smoke either so how exactly do you plan to attract this demographic if you continue to build ships with these open air casinos and smoking areas (Spice h2o) that do not respect non smokers desires?

If the cruise was 100% alcohol free I would prefer that but I am in the vast minority .

Yeah, so many are concerned and affected.

The most common and dangerous thing on a cruise ship is falling. Would you book a cruise that guarantees no movement? Maybe doesn't even leave port! Would you pay more for it? There seems to be a lot of hyper focussed venom regarding the issue of smoking on a cruise. It really should be much lower on people's list of concerns.

That doesn't fit their agenda hence they ignore that fact. Ironically enough most of the falls involve alcohol but they ignore that also because they like to drink.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

The difference between your analogy and mine (movement free vs. smoke free) is that the choice to participate in cruising and endure movement is mine to make. Having smoking on a ship takes away choice from 83% of the people who don't smoke. This post was never intended to get feedback on eliminating smoking entirely. It was asking the 83% of people who do not smoke if they would be interested in a 100% smoke free CRUISE. I asked if people were willing to pay a premium, because it might entice a line to have a couple of completely smoke free cruises a season.

Personally, I find the smell of smoke disgusting. If I am able to avoid it, I do. It seems on some of the newer ships, the design is such that indoor areas are polluted by smoke.

If you like to smoke - that's fine. I am not asking to take it away from you. I was simply wondering if there were others who were like minded with me that they would love to have the opportunity to have a cruise where smoke is not inflicted upon them. That's all.

Other people's eating and drinking doesn't impact my ability to breathe clean air. The movement of the ship doesn't smell bad. People eating fried chicken and dropping things on the floor has nothing whatsoever to do with the smoking issue. These are all red herrings to take the focus away from the main point of the post.

But at the same time, the post is asking a rhetorical question. OF COURSE non smokers would book an all non smoking cruise! Certainly you didn't believe the question would be free of debate! And my analogies are good ones. People have their own perspectives and those who are dissatisfied will likely always be dissatisfied with something. Most people on this board have been cruising for years. None of those years have been smoke free cruises. Why change what everyone loves? [emoji3]

Environmental issues are killing everyone and the planet. I don't see many angry villagers complaining about using too many dishes, cleaning their sheets, using plastic on the ship, eliminating laundry. This doesn't even touch on the "legal" waste a ship dumps at sea. Telling you... every smoking related thread is fueled by judgement and gang pack hate.

I've been cruising for over 25 years. In that last 25 years, smoke has been consistently limited from day-to-day life. People LOVE that - the 83% of us who don't smoke and don't want to be around smoking. Asking for a cruise that caters to the majority isn't a stretch.

I don't get the anger and irrationality I'm seeing from some of these posts. Just don't book the smoke free cruises if you want to smoke. I would like to have an option where everybody gets to choose whether there will be smoke or not.

No red herring intended. I'm using analogies that are equally ridiculous to the overblown reaction against smoking on a cruise.

It's not overblown - many people find the smell of cigarette smoke to be downright disgusting. Many more of us don't want to breathe it in. 83% of people don't smoke, and that number is increasing by leaps and bounds. I think it irks smokers that they are becoming social pariahs. Nobody wants them around anymore.
