If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

No way! Smokers have only the casino. Non smokers have the rest of the ship! Want non smoking sections in casino, fine! Make smoking cabins, a smoking section in the theater, dining room, lounges, etc. I'll tell you, many non smokers can be militant, irrational and down right rude. Shocking that US citizens seem to be the only ones who have magically developed instant "allergies" over the past 10 years. Europeans, asians, South Americans don't fan the air and cough when they walk by. Madness!

And as far as the casino... cruise ship casinos operate like those land based. They cater to gamblers, and many gamblers smoke. If you THINK you're a gambler and the casino cares about your smoking opinion you're wrong unless you:

Happily budget to lose $1000/day for everyday of the cruise on slots

Play the tables for 4+ hours per day at a $50/hand minimum.

If you play less than the above, you may as well just go to the kids arcade. Oh... and it's non-smoking there! A win for everyone!

Thanks! I found this hot topic on the trending section and couldn't resist. I would be for paying more to have a "smokers package." It's $200 more, only rear third of ship on upper decks. Includes carton of cigs, souvenir ashtray. Allows smoking on balcony. I don't buy the whole fire thing! There have been far more kitchen and electrical fires than smoking fires on ships. I don't see them eliminating kitchens and electronics. Good news for the cruise lines: non smokers would pay more. Smokers would pay more. Makes a good case for smoking and non smoking cabins - at higher prices for all of us as our punishment for not being able to get along!

Yes, I would go on a smoke free cruise since I am a loyal NCL past guest. However, been there, done that. On the Carnival Paradise like a million years ago. And guess what? Half the people on the sailing were sneaking smokes when they thought no one was looking or where they couldn't be seen by cameras. (Remember cameras and surveillance was not nearly as sophisticated as it is now.) And they smoked on the excursions we booked with the ship (another dumb thing to do back in the day but hey I was young and stupid) because the tour operators didn't care. So realistically I don't think it works even with the best of intentions. So to answer the second question, no I would not pay extra because the system is flawed. I'd rather spend the extra cash at the roulette table!!

My wife and I cruised on the X Reflection the 1st year it sailed, it has a nice bar at the back called the Sunset Bar 1/2 is smoking the other 1/2 is not. So on day 2 or 3 we are sitting there and a guy we had been talking to while enjoying a few drinks tells us that security knocked on his door on the morning of the 2nd day and told him it was against ship rules to smoke on his balcony. He had no idea, not everyone reads cruise critic etc, he did not mind he just did not know. So I post this story on CC when I get back and there must of been 5 people telling me that he knew and was just trying to skirt the rules, he should of been fined etc etc. Mind you none of these people were on this cruise, just the militant non-smokers going crazy. Same cruise there was a really nice couple my wife and I talked to for about 3 hours in the same bar, after a while they said "I know you smoke but it is too bad that this bar is smoking because we love it back here" I told them the other 1/2 of the bar was non-smoking and they were shocked and delighted LOL

Not if your cabin beneath the casino smells like smoke 24/7 like mine did for 21 days!

And to the poster who said they got refunded for their cruise for the same thing.........wow, I only got some chocolate covered strawberries and never got moved!! Good job, you must complain much better than I did.

Well something tells me that they complained so often to guest services that they made a point of telling them that they would sleep in a public area and to be rid of them GS told them to go right ahead and do that and that was emphasized in the 50 or so emails & phone calls to NCL got them their refund with the promise they never sail them again.

Nothing wrong with what this passenger did. No one wants to sleep in an ashtray, I remember in the old days when rent-a-car companies allowed smoking, I refused a car a number of times because the car smelled like an ashtray, it is not as easy on a cruise ship

Folks need to complain when there is an issue like this (or folks smoking on their balconies or smoking in the casino when not playing), as there is no excuse for smoke to go into a cabin and for NCL to expect their customers to have to smell that 24/7 is inexcusable. If enough folks complain and write letters, possibly they will fix the issues.

I take your advice every time I get a post cruise survey, I complain that I cannot smoke on my balcony.

Maybe since many states put laws in place to protect the public from 2nd hand smoke we are more sensitive to it since we are not around it anymore.

I don't remember smoke bothering me as a kid or young adult, but now it really irks me. I don't know anyone who smokes so when I do smell it, it's like a shock to my senses. I'm not sure what's worse smelling smoke or B.O., but either is bad.

Way to go...great idea....of course it works both ways and since there are more non smokers than smokers you want us to give our opinions about smoking too of course don't you?

I wonder if NCL ever looked into having specific cruises be 100% non-smoking? If they did:

1. Would you book one?

2. Would you be willing to pay a premium to book a cruise that was 100% smoke-free?

1. Yes

2. Yes - it's called Celebrity. So for NCL it would have to be less than the same cruise on X.

Actually not all gamblers smoke. Where Im from there is a province-wide indoor smoking ban so the casinos are all smoke free and still packed.

The issue is one cruise line trying to do it because then, yes you risk losing that percentage of your business that smokes. Which would be a diminishing segment but significant all the same.

If it was an across the board ban that all lines had to enforce then the silly comments about empty casinos would disappear.

Bans wont happen though. But what will is pretty getting smarter and not smoking in the first place and in time the smoking population shrinking to the point it makes more sense to alienate that segment to make the larger segment happy.

The seemingly offended remarks from smokers is a bit funny. All the smokers I know fully accept that they are stupid for smoking and wish they had never started in the first place.

They will never ban smoking in the public rooms and bars, they will never ban smoking in cabins, they will never ban smoking on balconies, they will never ban smoking from almost all outside areas. It is not matter of if but when.

Now wouldn't this be great. Hope I'm still around for this. I haven't met one person who has stopped smoking who regrets it. It is a very difficult thing to do though (speaking from experience) and most smokers are afraid of stopping big time, but it is possible. There are also so many more smoking cessation aids than there used to be. There is no longer any justification for continuing to smoke in public places. More education around this issue would be extremely helpful too.

Totally agree with you

All one needs to do is look back 30 years....and analyze everything anyone ever said ...such as.... ...nope it ain't ever going to happen...but it certainly has happened. Just think about what we were shocked at in 1986...but is totally legal now and accepted now. Lol

Heck all one needs to do is look back a few months ...forget 30 years

It's only a matter of time but since I don't gamble or need to sit in the bars right next to these open air casinos on the mega ships I can wait. Since le bistro changed menu I don't need that place either...mega ship OR jewel class The staircase pix are already hanging in my home so no need to stand in the smoky 6/7/8 atrium to get another one

And it's always a good idea to walk more when on a cruise so I just take the long way around the casino

And we only have one more kid to get through college so then we will have the extra cash to sail X

Again...it's only a matter of time

Celebrity is not smoke free. I listed zones where one can smoke in this thread. At least 5 of them
