How long is a typical meal in the MDR (Oasis)

Recommended Posts

Going on our first cruise next month on the Oasis and was just curious how long a 'typical' meal lasts in the MDR. Don't know if they pace it towards how quickly you want to get in and out. Wanted to plan our nightly activities accordingly. We plan to eat at the earliest time available each day.

Just two of us, thanks! Good to know! I had read a few reviews about it being two hours so just wanted to make sure.

Last month on Anthem, our large group had dinners that lasted up to 2 hours, maybe a bit more:cool: cause we were not in a rush and liked the slow pace. On a few nights, we let the serving staff know that we were booked for a show and wanted to have dinner in less time, and we were done in less than an hour. Closer to 45 minutes.

It's always a good idea to mention your time constraint to your waiter.

As long as it takes. We have no idea what kind of waiter you will get, or the food you will order, others at you're table ,etc. . There is nothing that says you have to stay if pressed for time, get up and leave, get your desert to go or if crunched for time eat at the wj

Depends on the size of your party. A party of two can be finished in about an hour.

In addtion it may depend on our wait team, but on Oasis or Allure its always been 60-90 minutes unless we wanted it to be longer. Only one cruise on Jewel it was averaging 2.5 hours.

In all honesty, if you let your wait staff know that you have a show or something that you are trying to get to, they will do their best to accommodate you. In November we were on the Harmony and one night we told our waiter that we were hoping to make a certain show and they didn't hesitate or lag when bringing our food. We had already looked at the menu earlier in the day, so we knew exactly what we wanted to order. An hour should be plenty of time.

Figure on 1 1/2 hours, start to finish. If you have a LARGE table, it might take longer...if it's just 2 of you, then shorter. It's not like most restaurants, where they bring the main course while you're still working on your salad! And I find it nice, not to be rushed! Hell, I'm on vacation...no hurry!

Since you want to eat as quickly as possible, you have a good plan to have dinner in the MDR at the earliest possible time.

Normally with just the two you, you'll be out in an hour. :)

You need to budget time on arrival at the restaurant for:

(a) queue to get a table (even with prebooking) - 10min

(b) time to give you a menu and take your order (the order-takers serve at least 5 tables each) - 10min

© wait for the food arrival - up to 45min!

(d) consuming appetizers and mains - 15min minimum

(e) getting menu and order taking for desserts - 5min

(f) wait for dessert arrival - 10min

(g) consuming dessert - 5min

If you're in a rush, tell the waiter so and he can expedite.

You can also tell the waiter to skip the dessert, or ask for smaller portions (e.g. one scoop of ice-cream instead of the default 3) if time is really tight.

We went for the 5:45pm slot every night and we can usually get out by 6:45pm.

Note that the show times mysteriously vary from night to night. And you don't necessarily need to aim to get to the first sitting.

Show times for Pixels show at Two70 on Ovation of the Seas (for 5-day Singapore-Penang-Singapore cruise):

  • Day 1 – 8pm
  • Day 3 – 6:30pm and 8pm
  • Day 4 – 6:30pm and 8pm

Show times for Royal Theatre shows:

  • Day1: Headline act by Connor Bogart – 9pm
  • Day 2: The Beautiful Dream - 6:45pm or 8:15pm
  • Day 3: Headliner act by Sean Laughling – 8:45pm
  • Day 4: Live Love, Legs - 9pm or 10:45pm.

In some cases, the 8pm sitting makes more sense. The only issue is what to do between say 7pm (i.e. when you finish dinner) and show start time.

In any case, note that even with prebooking, try to arrive 30min before the show starts to secure your seats (especially if your family is big), as it's still free seating on first-come-first-serve basis.

On Oasis last week, our party of 4 took between 60-90 minutes the three times we ate in the MDR. At the specialty restaurants, it was closer to 90 minutes to 2 hours. Izumi hibachi and Chops were the longest for us.
