QV stuck in Amsterdam

Because of high winds we will not be departing Amsterdam at 5.30pm today. It is now going to be tomorrow at 12.30.

It is just too windy to go through the sea lock. This is what we were told by the guide on our tour today.

So no Zeebrugge/Bruges tomorrow. We had a Cunard tour booked so will be refunded.

I don't think we'll be booking anymore 4 day cruises as this is the third time we've had a port cancelled due to high winds. (Remember the cruise to nowhere :) - but that at least was in December). Yesterday the weather was lovely and sunny but today there is a storm due here.

I am also on the ship. The last time I sailed out of amsterdam with P&O it was so rough that the pilot couldn't get off and they were only serving drink in plastic glasses.

The weather today seems very far compared to that.

I am in engineers central at my cabin- huddles everywhere. I am perfecting my Italian greetings. Some more seemed to be getting on in Amsterdam.

Wow, an overnight in Amsterdam.

Has to be preferential to a stop in Zeebrugge surely?

Seems the whole area is bothered with the bad weather. Aida Prima, were relatives are currently doing a Med Cruise were stuck in Southampton for two days due to the storm! They missed Le Harve and went to Zebrugge last evening- Captain said they were due for quite a bumpy ride and asked to store all moveable objects in the cabin in safe places so they can not fall all over the cabin!

We already did an overnight in Amsterdam on Monday night. Our cabin is right opposite offices with lights left on all night. I'd much rather be at sea! Thank goodness for the blackout curtains.

We have been using the port's bridgeway (like they use at airports) all the time rather than gangways.

The ship must be losing a lot of revenue with the shops and casino being closed for such a long period.

They are still refurbing queens grill suites 7150/2. Also aft of deck 8 suites.

Still windy. All aboard 12.30pm and due to leave at 1pm.

Thank for your posts, Ray. Sorry about what happened - I'd be disappointed too. I don't suppose any compensation was given to passengers?

Salacia

No compensation offered Salacia, nor was it to be expected in this case. An extra night in Amsterdam in my opinion is an added bonus, especially when you take in to account Hotel room rates. The same rates similar to NY hotels.

Unlike the fiasco a few years ago which Ray mentioned, were we just bobbed about the Ocean for 4 days and got back to Southampton a day early. Very little Compensation was offered , I think it was about $30 obc added, not good for those on the all inclusive Alchol package.

I remember many years ago being on board Canberra when she developed engine problems. We needed to miss a port, (Valletta), though it was replaced with another port. I could not believe the amount of passengers who had only chosen this cruise because it was calling at Malta.

For me a cruise is all about the ship. The ports are a bonus, but not the be all and end all. In fact I'd go as far as to say in most cases I'd be very happy if we had to miss a port, certainly wouldn't be looking for compensation.

Seems most people on board QV have taken this slight setback with dignity, and I'm sure they will still have a great time.

Trevor Fountain, While you might not mind if a port is cancelled, there are those who might feel otherwise. For example, I imagine that passengers who book a cruise based on an itinerary in the hope of visiting a particular port or ports, or if they had booked a non-refundable private tour, or made arrangements to meet friends and/or family members at a certain port might be justified in their disappointment should that port/s be cancelled.

In other words, please consider that what might be a slight setback to some, might be a big disappointment to others.

Very true. We have been lucky with our must see ports, St Helena, Falklands and Egypt when it was safe. Would have been greatly disappointed to have missed any of them. And who wants to do a sail by instead of a landing. That's really adding insult to injury.
