Earthquake in Caribbean

Recommended Posts

There are reports of a large (7.8M) earthquake right on the fault line, near Honduras. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/at00p2bjxw#executive

Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands are under a tsunami advisory.

Anybody currently on a cruise, be safe. Hopefully nothing happens, Puerto Rico is still recovering from Maria.

What I just read said the wave could be up to 1 meter so if true the ships should be fine.

NOAA is reporting 1m displacements in the open ocean, risk is more so for harbors, ports, and coastal communities rather than out at sea. It is an advisory, not a warning, so it's not the big scare of massive casualties and damage, but the wave can still potentially cause a bit of havoc on beaches.

I checked Sea Scanner and the Liberty is between Cozumel and the Caymans - very close to the quake site. Has anyone heard from friends or relatives onboard? We board Liberty next Sunday.

None of RCs ships are parked in the tsunami advisory area and all are reported safe.

The tsunami advisory was just cancelled; looks like a small tsunami was generated, but nothing to justify keeping the advisory in effect.

Another good link to have on hand is http://www.tsunami.gov/

I read on my roll call that Liberty is between Cayman & Mexico, in the area Of the 7.8 earthquake last night. Not seeing many reports Of land damage. The tsunami warning originally issued has been rescinded. Just wondering if there is more info? We sail Sunday!

It's all over...no tsunamis...no major damage..just one of those things!

Yup, glad it was nothing serious. Still though, it's a good reminder to be aware of some of the less common occurrences. Seems like we're generally aware of hurricanes and hurricane season, and things like winter weather if you're flying out of or through the east coast or northern states, but don't hear a lot about underwater earthquakes and tsunami risks.

If anybody else is like me, I've been doing a bit of research on being tsunami ready. I work with our local National Weather Service a lot through my husband, and it's always a good idea to be weather ready. Some good resources sent to me by the NWS:
