From the perspective of cruising, Rome (actually Civitavecchia) is best done as the embarkation/disembarkation port where to can spend at least three days (and still only scratch the surface).

If this is your first visit to Rome, you may want to just do a city driving tour to get your bearings for an eventual land trip return.

But, if you want a truly memorable, in depth experience, opt for a tour (with a licensed guide) of the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel.

The first time I ever visited Rome (about 35 years ago) was during a port day.....when we still would take cruise line excursions (we now try to avoid excursions). At the time there was a full day escorted tour of Rome which included the Vatican Museums (Sistine Chapel), St Peters, Forum, Colosseum, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain (amazing I still remember). It was a very intense tour, but an excellent way to get a one day overview of the best of Rome. I assume the OP has a similar tour option and this would be our recommendation. Just keep in mind that if you do take ship excursions in most ports you might have to mortgage your first born :).

We lived in Rome 35 years ago and the number of tourists - especially during the summer - has increased astronomically since then thanks to cruise ships unloading thousands and thousands of tourists a day. I agree that those sites are the highlights but that itinerary now (and I was in Rome for 6 days in October) would be next to impossible given the lines everywhere even with timed entries. When we took our grown children to Rome (where they were born) and Florence on a land vacation in June 2011, I spent most of my time telling them to come back (on their own dime :D ) in the middle of winter. The weather would be colder but the crowds would be much smaller.

Many of us agree you would be so much better off using a private company...I would highly recommend for your consideration...http://www.romeinlimo.com ...they gave us an amazing day to remember which included a private tour of the Vatican.

I spent a few weeks as a tourist in Rome (not on a cruise, obviously) and it wasn't nearly enough.

If you like fine artwork and ornate churches, then the Vatican museum, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel is where you should spend the day.

If you want to see more of the ruins of ancient Roman civilization, then the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill is your destination.

If I only had one day, I'd pick one or the other of these two destinations. There are many other nice ways to spend a day in Rome, however. There are tour busses that will drive around and give an overview of many of the sights, but with one day, you won't have enough time to see anything in depth. As Capriccio points out, there are lines for all the major attractions, so if you want to do more than drive by, you'll be waiting.

Another vote for https://www.romeinlimo.com

No shortage of testimonials here and TripAdvisor. Another great benefit - they have a companion website where travelers can arrange to share a vehicle with others. Our family of four hooked up with four others and shared a Mercedes Sprinter for the day. Saved a lot compared to the price of a sedan for just the four of us.

Jany is their primary customer contact and tour coordinator. I can't say enough positive things about our experience with her.

Good luck with your decision.

I agree! Have used them on 2 Med cruises to 5 different ports.

You will see and do far more than any ship sponsored tour.

Check their reviews on TripAdvisor.
