So back on board and although a cloudy day , the rain has held off . We are docked next to a MSC ship and i took a few photos .

I also took a shot of the gym , i haven’t been inside and i doubt i will [emoji1]. The other place i haven’t been to is the ice bar . Quite a few have donned the thermal gear and paid for the privilege to do so . Since I’ll be freezing my plums off for free from Sunday on, i have no desire to go anywhere less than 70 degrees . Each to their own

I’m planning on hitting Shanghai dining room later and will post some photos .

For now it’s in to the sauna and therapy pool with some orange tea . Every cruise i drink flavored tea and enjoy it and swear to drink it at home . I never do

Well after a lovely day in Cozumel and taking a nap to refresh, i decided to go to the MDR for dinner instead of Shanghai. I tried Savor as I’d tried Taste earlier in the week.

I ordered sliders, soup and a fish entree . I am sorry to say, it was the worst dining experience of my life .

The soup arrived and it was a delicious creamed cauliflower . After finishing , i began on the slider and the salad which accompanied . I immediately felt like i had swallowed a stick or needle. Please imagine my horror when i saw the remains of an insect in the lettuce . I went to the bathroom and tried to clear my throat , it finally let loose . I’ll spare you how .

I called the maitre d over and showed him my plate . He apologized and offered me something else . I explained i needed to leave and like to be eating anything . To be honest , i was shaking and just needed some air . I took a walk and returned to my room to find a plate of chocolate strawberries. That is the extent of the follow up . I’m a little stuck for words in trying to explain this evening so maybe I’ll have more to add . I’m extremely annoyed and a bit freaked out that i ate a large insect but just want to sleep . I’m attaching a photo of the remains, i apologize if you find it disgusting. 3d0b0c3e5c882b81034c5de760812a47.jpg

Good morning

Having slept on this , I’m just anxious for the cruise to be over . If you’ve been following along my review , i think I’ve come across as someone who tries to go with the flow . I was excited to get this cruise under my belt and become a platinum guest . To be honest , now i just want to get home .

I really won’t be posting much of a review as quite frankly , i just don’t care what happens as i will probably just lay low and read . I’ll answer any questions you may have but I’m kind of checking out .

Thanks

I am so sorry this happened to you. Is there anyway you can show this picture to the ship's doctor? You are probably fine but it would be reassuring for them to tell you so and of course they should NOT charge you for the visit.

Possibly came onto the ship with the salad/produce? Salads scare me since one time many years ago I ordered one at a restaurant (Pittsburgh, not a cruise) and was eating away when my eye caught something move. Closer examination revealed several, more than I could count, tiny green bugs alive all over the lettuce. The lightening in the restaurant plus the size of them made them hard to see. Since then, I haven't been a huge salad fan. It was on the news in New England last week where someone found a lizard in their salad (pre-packaged kind from the grocery store). Very gross though and a terrible way to ruin a vacation.

Wow, no words.....just gross. Any idea on what kind of bug that was?

I'm a South Florida Native, and that's the leg of what we call a Palmetto Bug and after googling a bit, it's properly known as an American Cockroach.

They....

Are....

DISGUSTING!!!

Shane, I am revolted by that picture and horrified for you. I hope you never ever have to experience something like that again. I'm glad you posted this, as I will be on Getaway in March.

In South Florida, especially in the rainy season, even the best home extermination program can't prevent cockroaches, so the saying is: "the only cockroach you should see is a dead cockroach."

I'm a 55 year old male, and to this day, when I find a dead roach on the tile floor I'm creeped out trying to slide paper under it to lift for disposal, not wanting to touch it.

That a roach came on board.... how? Perhaps any of the following:

-a passenger's luggage

-filthy conditions near and around the dock at the Port of Miami,

-an infestation in a storage area of one of the food purveyors for NCL,

-an infestation on board NCL Getaway, which would be by far the worst situation.

For me to be as comfortable as I have been, taking as many cruises as I've taken, I have always had to believe in my mind that sanitation, pest/rodent control & prevention are paramount on board passenger vessels to avoid sickness and disease. So that if something does make it on board during provisioning, that it will soon be dead.

I was supposed to pick up a certificate from a local casino where I play for a 14 night complimentary cruise in a suite on Carnival. Between the time I RSVP'd to go get the certificate on a certain date, and that date, I learned that FOUR Carnival ships have failed their health inspections. Hearing that news, I have no further interest and passed on the certificate.

Shane, for NCL to send the chocolate covered strawberries, I think they should have included a handwritten note:

"Oops! Sorry about that! Here's some other food from our filthy galleys. Enjoy!"

That makes me feel the correct people (senior staff) are not even aware of your issue. Perhaps just the dining room manager thought they were being pro-active with their gesture. Sending a freebie with a sorry note is what I (and others in the hospitality industry) referred to as Buying-off the guest: we did something wrong, so here's something free for you to get over it. That doesn't even begin to address the underlying issue-- especially in this case.

My initial thoughts are to print in color this page including the photo and bring it with me. Senior officers (based upon my two sailings on Escape last year) are very responsive and willing to sit and talk about issues. My question for the F&B Director would be: "how could this happen?" (Oh, and BTW, if I do this, it's not about me stepping in to assist Shane or get involved in his issue. He identified an issue that could happen again and again, perhaps in different ways, as a result of a lapse.)

Shane, I've read many threads on these boards that amount to: "as soon as I crossed the gangway a crew member did xxxxxxx and it ruined the ENTIRE CRUISE and nothing was any good about it." I hope we all roll our eyes at that. I view your situation differently.

I read your entire review so far, yes, I'd be annoyed by the accounting issues and how they were handled. But it seemed you were genuinely making the most of your cruise and having a great time, doing the things you enjoy doing.

I can totally relate to your last posting this morning where you sum it up twice: "I just want to go home." I would too. And I don't think I'd ever want to think about NCL again. They ruined the entire cruise!

Despite all the great parts of your cruise, there's only one thing I'd expect you to remember.

Again, I'm glad you shared this, but I'm sorry that you had to experience it.

Wow, that's disgusting. So sorry that really spoiled your trip.

I know that happens way more than we all realize in both land and sea restaurants.

What would be the appropriate response by NCL? In a restaurant at home, you'd probably get your entire meal and drinks for free -- and maybe even a gift card to come back -- but on an all-inclusive cruise, that's not a viable solution.

Thank you for the comments . Having read some of them, i went to guest services to express my disappointment at the lack of follow up . I spoke with the restaurant manager who stated they are following the incident all the way back to the purveyor . He explained it happens from time to time . I informed him I’m not mad , I’m disappointed and disgusted. To his credit, he explained there was little he could do only offer a meal or a spa service like a shave etc. I answered that i wasn’t looking for anything but rather expressing my annoyance that there had been no follow up other than having strawberries delivered to my room .

I’m glad it happened so late in the cruise as i think I’d just have flown home . I’m pretty social and i feel as if people know when they ask me how my cruise is going !!. I know it sounds silly but i don’t want to interact . I have my suitcase packed and will walk off in the morning first thing .

I’m aware these things happen , i just don’t want it to happen . There is nothing they can do to . I have the soda pass, thermal pass and the internet pass . I’ve spent quite a few dollars and had hoped I’d have had a better trip. Even though I’ve now reached platinum, my thoughts are that I’ll try another line . I’m aware it may and could happen anywhere but nonetheless, a change may be best.

I’m not one of those people who goes to guest services and complains about minor issues looking to get something. I’ll just go somewhere else .

I really hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else , it is not pleasant . I know I’ll be more vigilant while eating in the future . Having said that , it’s not a nice way to dine , hoping not to find any foreign object in it .

On a positive note , the soup is delicious and I’m sticking to that

How were the solo meet ups in the lounge? Were they well attended? What were the age groups of solos?

I have sailed studios the last few years and only once have i seen a decent turnout for a solo get together . They advertise meeting locations and I’ve walked by but never saw more than a handful . There is a group belonging to Singles international Travel that seem to know each other. I normally avail of coffee and OJ first thing but rarely have hung out there. A bartender works there a few hours a day but i don’t think he does much business

I'm not trying to diminish your experience, but you still have half a day to go... Make the most of it. No one has ever died from eating a bug. Water under the bridge, enjoy your vacation...

I’ll give it a shot, thank you . An afternoon in the spa is on agenda

So after a wasted day of feeling sorry for myself and eating soup and ice cream , i decided i worked too hard all year to not make the most of a bad experience.

I went to Cagneys again and ordered soup and a porterhouse. As always , Cagneys is a solid meal and I’m glad i didn’t go to the buffet for more soup !!

I like dressing up to come here and it’s always a little odd to see jeans and baseball caps dotted around the restaurant . There are some older folks here who are in a tuxedo and a beautiful gown right out of the Titanic. Different strokes i guess but i can tell you who looks the best in my opinion

I’m nearly packed so my plan is to catch a show in the theater ,pick up some last minute gifts and hopefully some sleep

FYI

I almost bought a watch ( stuhrling) that was reduced for $695 to $149. I decided to check the brand and price on amazon and the same watch was $79 on Amazon. Same with Invicta and Citizen . Just a heads up !! ec041330baa9c18f8381258798934d06.jpg3d20c5179deea0df94e05864cd223c18.jpg

Glad you decided to make the best of it. As someone mentioned while not pleasant the insect is not likely to harm you. In fact, in places in the world similar critters are part of the normal cuisine. That doesn't make it any more pleasant for you, but it might ease your mind about illness.
