A couple Q's about passports

I got it from here: https://www.bahamas.com/entry-requirements. And I'm a non-us citizen so not sure if the closed loop cruise thing applies in my case. The page says "If you are departing The Bahamas for a country that has the passport validity requirement of six (6) months beyond the dates of departure, then that requirement will be enforced." In my case this 6-month requirement shouldn't apply though...

 

Just don't want to be denied boarding :D:D:) These passport things can be frustratingly complex... I'm trying to send Royal Caribbean an e-mail and get a definitive answer in writing, just wondered if anybody in here would have been in a similar situation or knows the answer.

I don't see why the closed-loop cruise situation would not apply.

I can tell you from personal experience you don't need a passport or even ID to get back on the ship at Nassau. Our DIL and grand daughter had all that stolen at the Atlantis. The ship didn't really care and CBP just asked a few questions when we came back into port.

That's interesting, we are always asked to show photo ID plus ship card by the port security people at Nassau.

If you don't have photo ID, they look you up on the manifest.

 

I thought I had forgotten my photo ID, but after they looked me up, I found it.

 

They may do a security screen, empty pockets, go through metal detector.

I'm assuming that the OP is in the US?

For UK travellers, if you renew your passport before it expires, the unexpired time is added onto your new passport and not lost.

This is very useful, as it means we can renew our passports at a convenient time of year, either when there is a quick turnaround at the passport office, or when we are not planning to travel for a while.

 

Many countries do that but the US isn't one of them. I wish that they would add up to 9 months of your previous passport's remaining time onto your new passport but they don't.

One time my wife left her photo ID aboard ship. After doing some shopping and such stuff she decided to go back to the ship before I was ready to head back. When she realized what she had, she came looking for me. However she couldn't find me.

 

She was able to get back on the ship, however she said it was hastle. First she had to have extensive conversation with a port security officer and then they escorted her to the ship checkin kiosk. They looked her up on the computer and allowed her to board.

It’s not really that big of a deal. A passport renewal costs $120 (or less? I just renewed mine and already forgot the cost...but it’s minimal). Divide that $120 by 10 years, that’s a cost of $12 per year. That means for every month you “lose” by renewing early, you’re losing a whopping $1 per month.

 

Renew 6-9 months before it expires, you’ve lost a whole $6-$9. No big deal.
