Rare Saint Greg Posted July 5, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 5, 2018 Book an excursion to see the Mayan ruins. Check out autoprogreso.com they are the company that provides the free shuttle from the port to town and back to the ship. Prices are better than carnival. Now a bunch of people are going to post “stay on the ship.” Don’t listen to them.
lukeduke07 Posted July 5, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 5, 2018 We went to an all inclusive on a day pass. pretty good day i must say. I think it was called The Reef Yucatan. Beach wasn't all that great but the pools were nice and the waiters kept your drinks full. Food was pretty good as well.
buckeyefrank Posted July 5, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 5, 2018 As a previous poster mentioned, I've heard good things about the Mayan ruins. Progesso is a good launching point for them. I would NOT go to the beach. We took the bus down the pier to the bus station. We got out and walked to the beach and were literally harrassed the entire time by vendors. We purchased some chairs and table from a local restaurant and ordered some food. The food was so / so... edible but can't say it was good. The beach has lots of rocks and you should probably put on water shoes to go in. The beach was not pretty and the water was very murky. Maybe it was just that day. The biggest problem was the vendors. No exageration, there was not a 2 minute span where we did not have a vendor trying to sell us something. Most of the time a simple "no thank you" works and they don't bother you anymore. We had the same vendors come by no less than 5 times in the time we were there, which was less than 45 minutes total... and we were harrassed on the way to and back from the beach. If you can do a resort or a tour of some sort, do it. Otherwise stay on the ship.... Do not go to the beach. That was our experience.
Luckiestmanonearth Posted July 5, 2018 #5 Share Posted July 5, 2018 Not a big fan of Progresso so we would normally stay on the ship (manufactured sea day) Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Mutumbojimbo Posted July 5, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 5, 2018 Uxmal is amazing, but the ride is about an hour and a half each way. We've gone twice, but be aware. If you want to take a shorter trip, Dziblchaltun is a closer Mayan site with plenty to see. Both places feature decent restaurants too. We took the shuttle in to Progresso before we went to Dziblchaltun. We got some decent items in a little market where we were dropped off, no one there was too aggressive, but we didn't go down to the beach. My mother took a tour to Merida and enjoyed that as well. We've enjoyed our stops in Progresso.
ABQrobin Posted July 5, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 5, 2018 Uxmal ruins. Its an all day excursion, worth every penny. You will walk about a mile total, on the tour, then free time to continue exploring, there is a lot to see, or eat at the restaurant there. A couple of shops there, better prices that at most ports. my video: Do it, you will love it.
El Gogo Posted July 5, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 5, 2018 We took a private tour with Lawson’s Yucatan Tours for our first visit to Progreso last week during our cruise on the Carnival Valor . We visited the village of Muna, then Hacienda Yaxcopoil , then the Uxmal ruins and the chocolate museum across from it . We had an authentic Yucatecan meal at a family’s home for lunch. All that and we got back to port 90 minutes before we were set to leave . Definitely the best guided tour we’ve ever done .
tidcruiser Posted July 5, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 5, 2018 We have been to Progress twice. The first time we went to uxmal and was amazing. In April we did the Chichen itza and. Cenote thru Carnival. Both are long days but both are incredible places to visit. Progreso is an industrial port with little to do close by. And as others hat said the beaches are not the best. cruisegal96 Posted July 17, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 17, 2018 You really need to do an excursion at the port. We did the Mayapan Ruins, Lazy River Tubing & Cave Snorkel & it was great. The Mayapan Ruins are closer than some of the others. We were on a new charter bus that was very comfortable with AC & restroom for the 1.5 hour ride to the ruins & cenote. We would do this excursion again next time in Progreso! See pics below:
