madmax195 Posted July 7, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2018 We are on board the Nieuw Amsterdam on way to Vancouver. I was denied change of us$ to cad$. It seems a bit odd to get such a poor service. We were in 2 Westmark hotels(owend by Holland America) in the Yukon and there to could not change money too. What a shame. Skipper's Mom Posted July 7, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2018 When traveling, we always have currency for the countries we are visiting before we leave home. Just saying. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Forums mobile app
Krazy Kruizers Posted July 7, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 7, 2018 Same here -- we always have taken the currency if where we were traveling.
Viv0828 Posted July 7, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 7, 2018 Same here -- we always have taken the currency if where we were traveling. We were in Canada for a week after our cruise. We cashed $50 USD into Canadian currency when we landed. We used credit cards everywhere and had $40 left after our week on Vancouver island. Don’t sweat it. CruiserBruce Posted July 7, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 7, 2018 The exchange rate into CAD will be horrible. Last place I would want to exchange money.
Fouremco Posted July 7, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2018 I've not experienced any cruise lines that offer currency exchange as part of their services.
AncientWanderer Posted July 7, 2018 #8 Share Posted July 7, 2018 I've not experienced any cruise lines that offer currency exchange as part of their services. They do offer it from time to time and in certain locations. To my best recollection, they have offered to change USD to local currency, but have never let us change back, if we didn't spend that local currency. Seems like that must have been HAL, since that's who we cruise with most often.
sail7seas Posted July 7, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 7, 2018 We experienced the same at least twice on HAL ships (Rotterdam was one of them. :) )
JT1962 Posted July 7, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 7, 2018 I agree with Viv0828. There is no need to get CAD for Vancouver. We were there before our cruise last May. I converted $ 60 US to CAD at the airport on our arrival. I only used it to tip the tour guides in Vancouver and on our trip to the Yukon from Skagway just to get rid of it. I still ended up with some when I got home. We used our credit card everywhere else and most places gladly accepted USD (most at 1 for 1, lol). cruisereaders Posted July 8, 2018 #11 Share Posted July 8, 2018 U.S. dollars are widely accepted in Canada. It is much better to go to a bank ATM and withdraw the Canadian cash you need or go to a Money Mart. You’ll. Get a be yer exchange rate.
