solo cruise deal prices increased

Recommended Posts

I wonder if Bonnie could look into this. There are seven solo cruise deals listed on Azamara's website. As of yesterday, the dummy booking I put into two of them shows no more deal. The price for one in the cabin is the same as for two in the cabin. No solo supplement. Is something changing with no more solo cruise pricing , but the webpage has not yet changed their offering display?

Hi Bonnie,

I couldn't see any solo supplement specials on the link you provided. Is there a further step?

I wish the website would show on the front page, when there are single supplements. I know it is not rational, but it annoys me when I have to go through the booking process to see whether a cruise has a single supplement special. Is there a better way? Are they always listed under another heading?

I find them by going to the Menu on the AZ homepage, then down to Deals, then All Offers, and single supplements are listed as one of the offers.

I would also like to know if other cruises are going to be offered under the single supplement offer. Having done twice the Suez Canal, I do not think I want to do it once more, not even because I am a fan from Azamara.

Unfortunately not many cruises are listed 7nder the single supplement offer and the supplement has increase from 25% to 50%.

Please Azamara, give us some cruises in which your solo passengers can join and not having to pay double to sail on one of your ships.

I sail solo and never understood the “having to pay double” logic.

I’m staying in a cabin for 2 so think it’s fair to be charged roughly the same as a couple, minus a correction for food / drink / port fees / etc. If Azamara can sell out its ships, they owe it to their shareholders not to offer large discounts to solo travellers (like me). If a sailing is selling poorly however, it’s a nice gesture for sure.

I know everyone loves to complain about the website, but the offers for solo travellers are very easy to find. Not everything is an IT issue.

I agree with you, and I've cruised solo and paid the double fare several times. However, I do feel on newly built ships, some cabins should be designated for solo cruises - a little smaller in square footage than the ones designed for two or more. I know NCL, RCCL and HAL have started doing this in recent years and they're so popular that they sell out quickly. I also know from just speaking with couples on board that on many of my cruises I've spent significanly more than them on things such as specialty dining, drinks, the casino, etc., a couple of times I spent three-times what the two of them spent onboard. There have been studies the past few years showing cruising solo has increased significantly the past several years, as more people put off marriage, choose to stay single, or baby boomers who become widowed.

When you book solo and there is no solo discount, you end up paying the same price as two people. This means paying double of what the price per person is. The only thing as a solo passenger you are not charged at regular prices (without the solo discount) are port fees. This was explained to me by a next cruise representative. Fine if some guests traveling solo find this to be OK, although I do not understand the logic. For me solo passengers in an “all inclusive” trip, per land or per ship, since they do not drink or eat for two people, shall receive, in addition to the port fees, at least the discount for those items. This is according to my experience in most organized land trips in several countries without restriction if the particular trip is selling well or not.

On ships, however, if the ship itinerary is not selling well, or it is a reposition cruise, as a solo passenger “maybe” there will be a solo discount. However in many ship itineraries, no solo discount is offered even if the ship is not fully booked. Again a logic, difficult for me to understand. But this is just me.

I’ve got no issue with paying 200% as a solo as I understand it’s driven by supply and demand, but what I do object to is Azamara promoting some of the single fares at 125% when in fact they haven’t been like this for a while and the reduced single supplements are now at least 150%. I cant find any at 125%. Sometimes also it’s specific to certain stateroom categories ie you might get the reduced solo fare on a suite, but not a balcony. This can make it confusing.

This is a screenshot from the Azamara UK website today. Azamara have always been vocal about their reduced solo fares, but it just needs to be transparent so we know where we are.

When I was planning my solo Azamara cruise, they had a "buy one, get one 50% off" sale and my cruise was included. I requested, Bonnie asked the home office and I was allowed that price for my cruise. So if you see one of those sales, it never hurts to ask for the discount.

Thanks for the answer, Bonnie. I guess the website had been updating just as I was looking. It is sad that there are only three solo deals for the next 2.5 years. When I was on board recently, they mentioned that I could look for, and take advantage of the "BOGO" offer when it might happen again and this would then be similiar to the old solo rates ( which used to actually be only 25% supplement). So I am hoping for this type of sale. I am hoping that the solo would not then have to pay for two port charges though.

Phil, I know that, in the past, you have pointed out the incorrect and misleading information on Azamara UK which states that solo deal is 25% supplement. I don't understand why the website has not yet been updated.

Neither do I. I thought it had been sorted, but seems to have reverted. Bonnie, if you look in again perhaps you could investigate?

I was told the other day that the text on our websites had been (US website) and was being (UK website) corrected to 150%. By 'reverted' do you mean you did see it was showing 150% and has reverted to showing 125%? Please let me know and I'll notify the web gurus.

It’s definitely showing as 25% on the U.K. site. To quote : “ singles pay the double occupancy rate plus 25%” .
