Obilix Posted October 6, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 6, 2018 We're doing a cruise from Amsterdam to St Petersburg next August, and I've been checking out a couple of days pre cruise hotel accomodation so we can be fresh for the cruise. Someone on a roll call thread suggested Movenpick as a near cruise terminal hotel, but I was suprised to find the cost per night was about AU $500 for a basic double room, and most similar establishments in the area charged about as much. Would it be cheaper to stay say 5 - 10 kilometres out of town and just taxi in on the day, or is that a realistic rate for a 3 - 4 star establishment anywhere in Amsterdam? Would Amsterdam traffic be an issue from out of town? I know the cost is what it is, and when in Rome, and all that, but, if can save a few meaningful dollars..... Any suggestions or recommendations? Kiwi Kruzer Posted October 6, 2018 #2 Share Posted October 6, 2018 Friends of ours joined a cruise in Amsterdam and they stayed at the Ibis Amsterdam Central .
The_Big_M Posted October 6, 2018 #3 Share Posted October 6, 2018 Yes, I found Amsterdam fairly pricey for accommodation but found a decent deal at the intell including breakfast for around $400. You’re right though, the price you see there is standard, esp given it’s close location. You can certainly get cheaper deals further out, but it then becomes how long are you staying, and have you been before eg it might be worth it if you have limited time to save travel time and transfer costs to look around vs more time travelling and less sightseeing. However if you’re just staying overnight, not sightseeing and going direct to ship a cheaper option further out makes sense.
The_Big_M Posted October 6, 2018 #4 Share Posted October 6, 2018 Oh, regarding other question, taxis are also pricey in ams, and most people cycle or take train. Streets in the city are tight so taxi is to be avoided if you can. We took the train from the airport to city which is great. If staying at maivenpock you could too, and it’s then about a nice 15-20 min walk w luggage to hotel from station.
NSWP Posted October 6, 2018 #5 Share Posted October 6, 2018 You cannot go wrong with the known chains.....Ibis, Mercure, Holiday Inn. Check their websites.
vozzie Posted October 7, 2018 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2018 We stayed at Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam Arena Towers pre-cruise...for that very reason...high prices in town. It's an easy train trip from the CBD, but a great hotel with a great buffet breakfast. We arranged a taxi to the port on cruise day...a nice big black Merc. cruisin-m Posted October 17, 2018 #7 Share Posted October 17, 2018 Check out Botel if you want to keep the budget in tact, it is very basic ex ship that is converted into a hotel has direct free ferry access to Centraal station every 15 mins. Remember it is extremely basic but it serves the purpose of cheap lodging centrally located. Otherwise check out Zaandam area if you want better quality whilst not busting the bank, hotel Zaandam has loads of charm to it as well. Like you mentioned central Amsterdam is not cheap at all! jg2256 Posted October 27, 2018 #8 Share Posted October 27, 2018 We stayed at the Banks Mansion last summer and it was awesome. Favorite place we have ever stayed and wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Amsterdam. Very highly rated on Trip Advisor. Right in the middle of the canals and easily walkable to just about everything. Price was a moderate. Wasn’t too far from the port via taxi.

jacknannie Posted December 3, 2018 #10 Share Posted December 3, 2018 I'm assuming you are catching the train from schipol to Amsterdam Central Station. Its cheap and very, very easy. There is an Ibis hotel right next door to the station, you can easily walk from there to the cruise terminal and easily catch trams for sightseeing. Amsterdam is not cheap. Obilix Posted December 3, 2018 Author #11 Share Posted December 3, 2018 (edited) Thanks everybody for your help. The Ibis centraal station looked good and reasonably priced, but booked out. We settled for the Westcord, 15 minutes walk to the cruise terminal or a 20 Euro taxi fare. It looks OK on the website. daily room cost without breakfast is about $240 AUD. Breakfast an extra $24 pp. per day. We will catch the train from Schipol to the railway station and probably walk or taxi to the hotel. From memory from some years back though, Amsterdam roads are not that luggage friendly. We will spend 2 or 3 days in the city, visiting the museums and sightseeing, and then take a few day excursions into the country side prior to the cruise. Once again, thank you all.
