Evening attire

Hello.  I was told the dress code is only for the dining.  But everything I read online states it's for everywhere in the evening. 

Is this true?

Or can my young 25 yr old children were sweatshirts and yoga pants in the evening for shows casino or just walking around.  I understand for all food including buffet they must wear min jeans?

Once upon a time, on formal nights (RIP) there was an expectation that passengers would continue to wear their finery throughout the evening. For better or worse, that is no longer the case, even on gala nights, so your young adults will be fine.

Not a lot of sweats and yoga pants... especially on Gala nights.  Although I have seen ladies in pretty tunic tops and leggings, maybe that's like yoga pants.  Slacks and a collared shirt meet the dress code even on Gala nights.  Unripped jean can be worn in the dining room on Smart Casual nights.  m--

Am on HAL - Noordam for first time in April, I understand that jackets and ties for men are no longer required on Formal or Gala nights as they are now called.  But do many men still don them? Jackets and ties that is.

On Gala nights you will see very few men wearing jackets and ties and even fewer wearing suits and tuxedos.

Except for Grand Voyages where many men wear tuxedos/dinner jackets, very, very few wear tuxes.  A few are in tie and jacket and fewer still are in suit and tie.  There are lots of men who just wear a collared shirt and slacks.  On gala nights I'll often wear a jacket with a crew neck shirt.

That may vary a great deal based on itinerary, and to a lesser extent on size of ship.

 

I have found that a high plurality of men wear at least a jacket on Gala nights on my cruises, and many in a jacket & tie.

I do tend to take longer cruises, frequently in Europe, on the smaller ships, however. But even my Alaska cruises seem to have a goodly number of men wearing jackets.

I think a lot depends on the itinerary.  On a short cruise into the Caribbean, the attire is more relaxed, but still in the DR on stated "formal" nights, it's more like Church on Sunday.  I've only seen once a man refused entry until he showed up with a jacket.  However, that was long ago, and maybe he would get by with a dress shirt and tie now.  Correct me if I'm wrong, please.  

 

Prinsendam is my all-time favorite ship, as we've had over 300 days on her including a World Cruise, and we are booked on this Caribbean cruise as a farewell before she goes to another company.

Not true on my Maasdam Sept/Oct cruise.  I was surprised to see the number of gowns & tuxedos.  Also many jackets for men & cocktail dresses for women - hardly any "sporty" looks that I saw.

Did a longish Mediterranean cruise in October/November.  There were many men in jackets, many with ties and one night counted 16 tuxedos just walking to our table in the MDR.  Many gals were in long dresses, skirts with glittery tops and generally a good looking group of both male and female cruisers.

I will wear a dark suit & tie on Gala night simply because I like to dress occasionally.
