I'll never be a fan of smoking areas, but it's a trade-off of freedoms: the right for people who enjoy it versus the slight inconvenience it causes me. And this is from someone who suffers from severe asthma, who grew up in an era where smoking was much more common than it is now. My experience on HA so far has not been significantly impacted by people smoking, though I have noticed it.

It's funny to think about drinking under the same lens, which is very roughly as bad for folks as smoking. There are certainly several drinking venues around the ship, and you even occasionally see the side effects of drinking; slurred words, bad jokes, the smell of alcohol, and occasional behavioural issues. I enjoy a few drinks on a cruise, and I'm glad for that freedom. I'll do my best to minimize the impact on others, but some personal enjoyment is good for us.

But no one in the vicinity of the drinkers is forced to take sips of every glass of booze being consumed around them.

You're right that drinking is less invasive to personal space.  And while I also do not enjoy second hand smoke, the impact on me personally is small enough to fit it in the category of to-each-their-own. I have only noticed faint smoke around the Pinnacle class ships a few times, but at best it has been a minor annoyance. It's never been bad enough to trigger my asthma, which I use as my personal boundary of discomfort. As for the annoyance part, I'm annoyed by many intersections of freedoms and humans, and have made peace with most of those things too 😆

No one on the ship is forced to sit in an area where smoking is allowed. You don't want to be near the smoke, don't go near the smoke. It's not like the smokers can go elsewhere.

Sure they can; they just can't smoke elsewhere.

Your experience is far different than many other cruisers.

I would say that his comments accurately reflect how many (dare I say most) cruisers feel and respond to the experience of how smoking is handled on HAL ships.

I don't care, but it's unfair that in accommodating them, it affects those who aren't addicted to tobacco.

I'm going to keep smoking where it's allowed and there's nothing you can do about it😆

You're absolutely correct and I wouldn't try to stop you.  However, I will take every opportunity to tell HAL that they need to make some changes to the smoking policy on Pinnacle Class ships and there is nothing you can do about it.  😆  HAL has dramatically improved the smoking policy in recent years and I hope they continue to improve the smoking policy.

See post #709

I find it comical that you only refer to your own posts, rather than others that often have a broader and more thoughtful perspective on how most people respond and deal with the current smoking policies on HAL ships.

And what would be that next step be that HAL could take regarding smoking policy on Pinnacle ships.. banning smoking altogether anywhere on any ship?

From what I've read of your posts, this is about the only thing that would make you happy.. pretty extreme if you ask me (and I'm a nonsmoker).

I am not the guy with the classy screen name, but IMHO smoking should be limited to outdoor areas away from food venues or inside areas which are completely closed off. Casinos should be smoke free. However, as long as most cruiselines believe that they will lose casino revenue  by banning smoking, we will continue to see it in casinos. A shame also because it is unhealthy for employees who have no choice but to be exposed to smoke if they want their jobs.

How about eliminating all indoor smoking on the Pinnacle Class ships?   Celebrity has already implemented this policy, so not very extreme.  How about moving the smoking area from the area by the Sea View pool on the Pinnacle Class ships to the top deck near the crew smoking area?

Agree with you, but there are those that would support banning smoking in an outdoor area, away from food venues (Deck 9 aft Seaview Pool).. makes no sense at all.

I would support banning all smoking indoors, but I'm not familiar with the 'top deck near the crew smoking area' that you you refer to.

Having just completed a cruise on Nieuw Statendam, I never experienced, or heard of this area. Is it well advertised as a designated smoking area for guests, and is it equipped to accommodate all smoking guests?

That crew smoking area exists on the Rotterdam, I'm not sure about other Pinnacle class ships, but it is a crew only area.  I think you could find another area on the top deck and make it available for the guests to smoke.

The Deck 9 Seaview Pool area serves as an outdoor dining area for the Lido buffet.  They serve coffee and juice in the morning during the breakfast hours.

Rotterdam is a Pinnacle class ship, and so the rest of your comment is pretty weak. Can you be more specific about 'another area on the top deck' other than wherever you don't want to be. Maybe the jogging area, or perhaps the sports deck? I'm sure those fitness minded folks would not like that very much.

Again, I go back to my previous comment that the only thing that would make you happy is totally banning smoking everywhere on all ships.

Oh right.. in that tiny area in the corner of the deck for coffee, juice and water. Give me a break. You're trying to include that as an outdoor dining area? Right..

The Sun Deck is a big place, I'm sure HAL can find a solution up there.  How about the Sun Bar that isn't used for anything else.

It's used as a bar.. duh. and the nonsmokers that want to enjoy that space? Your recommended options seem to be getting smaller and smaller. How about deck 15.. jeez
