Jareds_mommytoo Posted January 7, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 7, 2019 We are going on a mexican cruise druring spring break, I see lots of posts about other ships. We were on the Veendam last Easter. What kind of differences will we experience? We have 2 teens coming too.

You'll have the Tamarind on the ship which is a great specialty restaurant.
CruiserBruce Posted January 7, 2019 #3 Share Posted January 7, 2019 If you look around the board you will find hundreds of discussions of what the N. Amsterdam offers. It is a great ship. Have sailed on here once, and have a cruise booked on here.
OlsSalt Posted January 7, 2019 #4 Share Posted January 7, 2019 (edited) You will notice a big contrast between the Veendam and NA - just off her sister ship the Eurodam for the same itinerary. Lots more people, younger persons, longer distances, more variety - different layout, different entertainment options. I think a younger family will enjoy this ship more than the more traditional Veendam - which was quite a bit smaller and older. We sailed the N/A last year ,and it was a very pretty ship in very good condition. We still prefer the smaller older ships like the Veendam, but if one has to move up in size and down in age, these class ships - the N/A and the Eurodam are a pretty good option. We like this itinerary a lot. Hope you have a very good cruise. And the Gallery "Bar" is a great place for teens to share board games and other table top games which was not a feature on the Veeendam, which still did have the quieter library space. The "bar" is not directly in the table game area but is part of the "sports" bar viewing screens that are also placed around the Gallery Bar. knittinggirl Posted January 7, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 7, 2019 (edited) We've been on both. Veendam has Vista Suites, while the Nieuw Amsterdam has Signature Suites. The Veendam actually has some of the largest Neptune Suites. On the Nieuw Amsterdam, you can get a balcony without spending extra for a suite. On the Nieuw Amsterdam, the coffee bar is in the Crow's Nest along w/ the EXC office. They have table top computer screens to promote the EXC tours. Veendam still has the rent a DVD system, while the Nieuw Amsterdam (at least in the Neptunes) has a wonderful online video library. We watched a lot more shows on the Nieuw Amsterdam than the Veendam because of the hassle of checking out the DVDs. On the Nieuw Amsterdam, I think they had the Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey, a recent Star Trek Movie, etc. No real library on the Nieuw Amsterdam, just a few travel books. Hope this helps -- Edited January 7, 2019 by knittinggirl
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 7, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 7, 2019 We have sailed on both ships -- the Nieuw Amsterdam more times than the Veendam. We really love that ship. Especially the Tamarind restaurant. It does attract a much younger crowd.
