Extended Cruise ship pier - EDEN, NSW.

Just back from a week at Merimbula down the coast. Had a drive down to Eden, lot of work going on building a long concrete pier for cruise ships, extension of existing pier. Making capacity for 2 x 320m long cruise ships.  Would be costing several million dollars.   All happening down there.

This is the sort of thing that regional economies need, rather than the make-work stuff that politicians always seem to be throwing money at.

Ports I wish could be upgraded to cruise ship capability:

Grassy, King Island

Smoky Bay, SA

Exmouth, WA

Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island

Lady Barron, Flinders Island

Macquarie Harbour, Tas

Jervis Bay, NSW

Coffs Harbour, NSW

Thursday Island, Qld

Nhulunbuy , NT

I agree, take the tourist dollar into the regional centres, they need it.   The 2 fish and chip shops at Eden wharf love it when the cruise ships are in, albeit only every month or two.  The pax are lined up out the door.

Good if they could do them all.

Unfortunately as the ships get bigger and bigger they need deeper and deeper water.

That's true, but it's not as much more as you might think.

Pacific Aria has a draught of 7.7m, the Symphony of the Seas has a draught of 9.3m.

The respective lengths of 220m and 360m are probably more of an issue.

But I still think it would be a big boost to these places to even get a ship the size of Aria into an anchorage.
