Thank You for the info.. the cruise specialist at AMA said we could contact her about any excursions we are interested in 90 days before .. I have a question for you about the day long excursions like to Salzburg.. do they provide lunches ( either bagged or restaurant ) ?  and do we make it back to the ship in time for dinner ?

They do not provide lunches for the long days. We take this as an opportunity to sample authentic regional foods. There  are food stands in Salzburg so you can sample a sandwich and a drink for not much money. Plus don’t forget the desserts in that region. lol. You will definitely return in time for dinner. Don’t worry about that. And, if you choose the optional excursion to a concert hall in Vienna, the dining room will be open early to accommodate the group attending the concert. You won’t go hungry.

That's great to hear.. I am looking forward to trying all the local foods I can while there .. and I hope to bring back to the states, some Hungarian Paprika 🙂

Yes. You’ll be able to visit the market in Budapest. The ship is docked walking distance.

The Hungarian paprika is much better than what we get here, and you can bring it back.

When in Budapest go to the main market and go up the stairs. On one side there is a restaurant layed out with tables and chairs and sometimes some musicians, This is for the tourists. On the other three sides you will find dozens of small family owned 'Fast Food' stalls serving the 'Real' local dishes at a fraction of the cost of the restaurant. We will be in Budapest for five nights in October and plan to visit this market.
I love the idea of eating from the local stalls but is there any seating for them?  We always try to eat at markets where travelling, but I really hate eating (and drinking wine) standing up.

I see there is a night cruise in Budapest , where the town is all in lights.  Does my ship do that night cruise or is it a excursion on another ship, that we need to book ?

There is some seating but not much (and it is tight and crowded with people trying to navigate around/between the stalls and seating area). I also remember a few chairs up against the railing by a few of the stalls. We did not sit when there - took our food outside & ate in Fovam ter (square) across the street - quite lovely.

In the main market there is the 'Tourist Part' that has tables & chair across one side and the other sides where the locals eat at a 1/4 of the price you have a lean too counter and bar stools.

during the day the ship will be moored close to the 'Chain Bridge' but as the sun goes down it will  cast off and do the Night tour passing under the bridges and along all the public buildings that are lit up. It will then re-dock probably close to St Margarets Island for the last night and your disembarkation the following morning. It is an included part of the cruise, so no booking or extra charge

I collect walking sticks.. and I see that in Europe they add the metal medallions of the cities over there .. did anyone see them in souvenir shops at stops along Danube stops   or maybe the sticks them self ?

You see them in virtually every souvenir shop all over Europe and most ar 'Self Stick' with the option of 2 pins.

I have been to Budapest many many times doing it on my own as well on river cruises now  6 times and just back 3 weeks ago. The DK Eyewitness tour guide of Budapest [not the 'Top 10'] is far better than Rick Steve's which IMO is 'Misleading ' in parts.

We are doing the reverse route of this cruise, from Budapest to Vilshofen in August.  I recently was able to sign up for our shore excursions on line.   I noticed that there was no evening concert option offered for sign up in Vienna.  Does this mean that AMA  won’t offer this optional tour, or do they have it, but you sign up once you are on board?

We were told is was number dependant once we joined this cruise and they took the bookings then. Unless it is fully booked already [It is an open venue where anybody can book tickets] I would think it will be offered. Well worth going to.

  I know that I can bring Paprika back to the states .. But has anyone brought Cheese's or sausages home ? I have friends from Hungary that said they would love if I could pick them up a few things ..like strudel , chocolates, and the cheese and Bratwurst ..

I suspect not as the USA ban the import of Haggis and Black pudding from Scotland which are both basically sausage. I think it might be party because the EU banns the import of chlorinated poultry and meat products containing steroids and that have been fed GM grain which are widely sold in the USA, but are all listed as not fit for human consumption in the whole of Europe because of long term health risks.

You are allowed to bring cheese into USA if it’s in a sealed package. Goose pate is sold at the market in tins so that might be something to consider. Also a very strong brandy called Palinka.

My brother brought back sausage that he bought in the market. He was unaware of any restrictions (which does not mean that there weren't any).

  We are leaving from the same airport as we will be flying back to.. maybe I can get a list from customs while we are waiting for our flight to board .. 

  Looking online I am seeing mixed postings.. some say no meats , some say no uncooked meats .. and cheese has the same thing going on..   So I may just bring back Paprika and strudel.. and maybe some wine.
