Webcam is very blurry this morning but looks like one of them is at the Broadway Pier- looks too far apart to be at the main terminal. Anyone know? It has something to do with the shoreside power connection which the downtown electrical grid is not sufficiently able to supply power both sides of B. Street at once. When they designed it, any second ship was to berth at Broadway Pier. So bad planning, for both piers. Tomorrow, the Celebrity Eclipse will be here.......2,850 capacity. I fondly remember boarding the old Pacific Princess at B Street many times when it was newly refurbished. My mom owned the womens' clothing store across the street when it was Holiday Inn and leased from the port. I heard many stories from her about their red tape. Kartgv Posted April 8, 2019 #15 Share Posted April 8, 2019 On April 3, both the Disney Wonder and Volendam were at the B Street pier, sharing the main building for security and waiting to board, with Volendam closer to the Midway. We boarded the Volendam and there were no power issues as far as we know. Boarding for both ships seemed to be delayed a little - didn't start until about 11:45 for Volendam, a little later for the Disney ship. The Grand Princess was at the farther south pier. What David is referring to is a shore electrical power unit, aka an alternative maritime power (AMP), positioned on the dock immediately alongside the ship as she arrives and is secured (see pic). Once mooring lines are attached to the ship and secured, those three light blue colored "prongs" at the end of the cables in the below pic are plugged into an electrical power unit inside the ship. This is accomplished by a member of the ship's technical team (usually the chief electrician and/or one of his assistants - in the pic the dude in the white overall) Doing this allows the ship at her berth to run lighting, heating (if required), air conditioning, refrigeration and other vital onboard systems on shore-supplied electricity. Plug-in shore power has been proven to eliminate the vast majority of all vessel emissions while a ship is at her berth, and allows the vessel to shut down her auxiliary engines.
