Help Please on Cabin selection

Hello everyone, we are in the process of booking a 14 night cruise to Alaska on the Ms Maasdam , for May next year.

We have booked a Vista Suite, bb 055, my question is , is that an ok room in a good location.and deck , is there any obstruction looking out over the balcony. 

Or would you pick a GTY cabin? We've never been on the Maasdam before so any help would be very much appreciated. TIA.

You have booked a connecting room on deck 10 under the lido on deck 11 and above cabins on deck 9.

 

The deck plan does not indicate in viewing restriction.

 

I cannot comment on the effectiveness of the connecting doors in blocking noise from your neighbours, it may or may not be an issue. I avoid booking connecting rooms.

 

You may experience some noise from the Lido with people moving chairs and just talking and other general dining area noise but again I can't really comment except I expect the carpet helps insulate for noise. I avoid being below dining areas.

 

You are close to the rear pool and could expect a fair amount of foot traffic in warm climate cruise, but not in Alaska - we cruised Alaska in May on the Maasdam and the rear pool area was very sparsely used, just the smokers mainly and not many of them at any one time.

 

If you book a Vista GTY (not sure what you meant by a GTY cabin) you may avoid the connecting room but not the Lido issue as all Vista suites are below the Lido. If you are very early risers I would not be concerned about being below the Lido but I would look for a different category cabin, possibly a verandah on deck 9, mid ship (but avoid being under the Casino on the port side and ocean bar on the starboard). I really like the site    https://www.cruisedeckplans.com/DP/deckplans/index.php  You can actually drag your deck over the decks above and below you or any other deck to see the relationship of your cabin to other areas of the ship.  It has helped me choose my cabins.

IMO, I would stick with 055 over the guarantee.  055 is under the Lido dining area, which is carpeted, so you should not have any chair scrapping noise issues.  Plus, you are near one of the only two elevator banks on the ship (one negative of the Maasdan is only two elevators).  I personally like being one deck below the Lido buffet, as it is a quick and easy access for a coffee or snack.  Since some of the A cabins are over the casino, you might consider marking your reservation "Do Not Upgrade" to avoid being upgraded to one of these.

 

The only negative I can see is the connecting cabin access - I do not have any experience on this, so I will leave it to others to discuss.

If there's not a lot of difference in price and it fits your budget, I'd suggest moving down to Deck 9 to a Cat A or B.  We like the Vista suites over the Explorations Café or Queen's Room, which are all port side.  Also vote to avoid adjoining cabins.

 

Enjoy your cruise.  We're about to embark on that wonderful 14 night itinerary a week from today on the Amsterdam, our third time doing it!  😊

We've had a half-dozen or so connecting cabins over the years and only had two with significant noise through the connecting door.  One was a couple that must have been hard-of-hearing that kept the TV on loud, and the other had two small kids that didn't use indoor voices.

I would not choose a connecting room.  A balcony GTY would be ok if they are a lot cheaper as all the locations are ok....but you could get a connecting room as a guarantee, but not likely.  Look at the halfacts for similar rooms.  We have been in 105 and 181 recently.  105 as an upgrade and 181 was a guarantee.  Both were nice.  I like aft cabins best because it’s easy to get to outside decks to take pictures and the Lido and dining room are aft. 

 

This is a really good itinerary and is part of the in depth EXC program which has more activities and guest speakers.  We were on the 21 day Maasdam in depth EXC itinerary this year and have done the 14 day previously.

I would never pick a guarantee cabin if I could pick my own. 

 

There are no balcony/Vista cabins on Maasdam that have staterooms both above and below. You are under the serving and eating part of the Lido (not a kitchen). @Vict0riann said that there was some noise but not awful. I think you are fine where you are.

Would BC 044 cabin be a better choice as its not connecting, on the other side , its a little closer to the pool? The cabins after BB or BC jump up to over $800 so that's not an option lol

FWIW, I'd book 044 over 055 because there's no connecting cabin and it's a little further back so "maybe" a little less traffic overhead from the Lido.

I agree.  GO with 044 - no connecting, closer to elevator/stairs and still under the carpeted dining area (barely).

 

Only possible negative - it is port side vs 055 on Starboard, if that matters.

I disagree. Because it's close to the elevators and stairs and almost below the Lido deck restrooms and the door out to the Lido Terrace, I think 044 would get more traffic overhead than 055.

 

044 will be a bit cheaper than 055 because it's a BC rather than BB.

Do not worry about being closer to the pool, go with 044 over a connecting.

I stayed in 046 once and there was no noise from above at all. We prefer 048 or 063 because of the missing overhang from the Lido but 044 is just as fine. You will hear the „bell“ of the elevator. That’s all. Locationwise the BC‘s are our favorites on the Maasdam.

Sorry what do you mean Overhang? We've never been on Maasdam, does that mean the Balcony roof is more covered lol?

On our last cruise on the NS we booked a cabin that we were unaware had a connecting cabin.  Whenever we were near the connecting door we could easily hear the conversation taking place in the other room.   Our future cruises will be specific about not having this type of cabin .....and honestly we are not that particular.

Thank you for the info, yes we've decided not to book the connecting room , our choice now is BC 044,046,048,050,061,or065.

046 and 050 will be the mirror image as you look from the door or the balcony, and therefore be arranged like this diagram:

with the beds either together or separated as you desire.

 

That might influence your choice! I know it would mine.

Some like exposed balconies for viewing the sky, others just feel exposed! It's pretty hard to look straight down from any window...

Do you think it would be more protection in the cabin with the overhang from rain maybe ,going to Alaska ?
