looking for a decent hotel near long beach port

looks like i will be doing an LA based cruise think i will come on a day early on Saturday  looking for a decent hotel or motel that will not break the bank for the one night stay and easy to get to the port from  thanks for any info

The port is on its own little peninsula away from downtown Long Beach.

The Queen Mary Hotel is the closest and then there's the Doubletree Maya by Hilton and then the Residence Inn by Marriott. We stay at the Doubletree with a special Carnival rate but the price will depend on your dates. They shuttle us to the port for free.

There are many more hotels in the downtown area of Long Beach which is about 10min away across a bridge/causeway. There are all price levels .

DIL just stayed at the DT and except for a rude front desk person who screwed up her reservation, she liked the rooms and grounds.  We have stayed on the QM and were there in January for lunch prior to going out to Catalina for the weekend.  The QM reeks of history and has some great self guided or escorted tours around the ship.  Some feel the rooms are a little tired, but that's part of the history.  QM you can walk across the parking lot and board.

We stay at the Hotel Current when we cruise out of Long Beach... they have a Snooze and Cruise package... I think $170 plus tax.  Nice pool... updated rooms... free shuttle to the port... leave your car parked there for free during your cruise.  Parking at the Port will cost almost as much as the hotel...

It's important to know your budget in U.S. dollars and it would be nice to know what day of the week you board,

 

If you are coming in a full day early to sightsee I'd choose Downtown LA, Santa Monica or Hollywood. Maybe West Hollywood.

 

There is no great need to stay by the cruise port.

Be careful of cheap hotels in the Long Beach area. Parts of Long Beach should carry warning labels.

Your title says you are cruising out of Long Beach, but your text says LA. The Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) is different than the Port of Long Beach; they are about 10 miles apart. What cruise line are you on? Carnival goes out of Long Beach, while most other cruise lines go out of San Pedro. Be sure you are looking at the right port.

From the OP's posting history, it sure looks like they are on the NCL Bliss--which means cruising out of SAN PEDRO, not Long Beach...and they are only coming in on a Saturday for a Sunday cruise.  And, it appears from other threads, they were even considering hotels in places like Torrance.

 

Personally, if getting in just the day before, I would stay in San Pedro for the optimum in convenience.  For longer pre-cruise visits, I would consider other locations around the area...but, day before, keep it simple...You can get an Uber or shuttle from LAX to a hotel in San Pedro and relax...knowing that you have no more local transportation or traffic to deal with...There are two hotels I would stay at in San Pedro--the Crowne Plaza or the Doubletree...the nicest and most convenient hotels in the area.  CP is the closest of the two to the port--even walking distance for most (about three blocks, flat walk, mostly along the waterfront through the terminal parking area)...but they will also shuttle you to the front door of the terminal.  Doubletree is a bit farther, but in a pleasant location and they will shuttle you anywhere in the area for free.  For those who think these two are pricey (though theyt are not by LA standards), the Best Western on Gaffey is a nice enough hotel, it's just the location is not quite as nice and restaurants are a bit away....   Past those, "cheaper" hotels in San Pedro have a few issues--which would take them out of the range of consideration for me.

 

Long Beach, at least the tourist area of Long Beach, is nice...and has some very nice hotels--but they're about equal in price range to the San Pedro hotels...and you have a longer Uber ride from LAX and an extra Uber ride back to the pier.  But, if you had a slightly longer pre-cruise visit and time to tour the Aquarium and the Queen Mary, they would be an option and the extra expense might be worthwhile...but, with little time, save the added troubles.  "Bargain" hotels in Long Beach are often not in good locations--either bad neighborhoods or far from the port...

 

Other locations in the area approximately between LAX and the port can run the gamut between very nice and highly questionable...AND, you are likely adding to your ground transportation costs and adding extra traffic time and considerations getting to the port the morning of your cruise.  And, the nicer hotels in better areas can be pricey just the same.

If you're sailing on Carnival the Hotel Maya is excellent but it can be a bit pricey - try to catch a sail. Failing that the Hilton Long Beach is great and has a shuttle to the port. The Hyatt Long Beach is also great with a nice walkable property.

Also look into the free Passport shuttle to expand your options location-wise

We are flying in 3 days prior to our cruise out of San Pedro.  Fling in Dec 30 and cruise Jan 2.  We have reservations at the Courtyard by Mariott downtown Long Beach.  Any feedback on this particular hotel?  Suggestions for New Year's?  Not looking for late drinking activities as 2 in our party do not drink.  I read about fireworks...

If the OP is sailing out of Long Beach (my interpretation is that "LA-based cruise" could be either Long Beach or San Pedro), then I second the Queen Mary suggestion.  In fact, I'm staying there for my cruise that's just a few days away.  I'm a huge history fan, it's walking distance from the Long Beach port, and there's a free bus to downtown.  

I'm sure I'll post a cruise review in the Carnival forum.  It will include a pre-cruise section of the Queen Mary and my whereabouts.  I'm definitely trying the In-N-Out Burger.

I stayed on the Queen Mary, which is 5 minutes walking distance from Port of Long Beach.  The hotel is expensive, and it's isolated from the rest of Long Beach.  But its historical architecture is amazing, and the AquaLink water bus you'll have to take to find a reasonably-priced restaurant is pretty fun.

 

Read the "Day 0" part for the pre-cruise day in Long Beach.  Enjoy!

If you are flying in three days prior and want to sightsee Los Angeles, Long Beach is one of the last places I'd stay. It is very far from most of the sights.

 

If you don't have a car, Downtown LA and Hollywood have the best public transportation. With a car, West Hollywood, West LA and Santa Monica are better choices.

 

Do remember that the Tournament of Roses, Rose Parade is on January 1 in Pasadena and one of the coolest things you'll ever experience. The run up to the parade is cool too, seeing the floats as they are being built and the preparations for the Rose Bowl football game.

My sister and I stayed at that Courtyard in April before our cruise out if San Pedro.  We liked our stay there.  It's a bit of walk to the Pike Outlet shops and other sights in that area but we didn't mind.  There is a Vons grocery just around the corner.  We only stayed one night so only walked around Long Beach the day we arrived. It was a short taxi ride to San Pedro.

Thank you!  How long of a walk approximately?  We don't mind walking.  Also assume a taxi or Uber would be fairly reasonable as well.  Glad to hear there's a grocery store nearby to grab some things before the cruise.

The Pike Outlets are about 3/4 of a miles from the Courtyard Downtown Long Beach, but did you get that this is not a good location for sightseeing LA sights like Hollywood, Santa Monica, Chinatown, The Grove, etc?

The walk was maybe 20 minutes.  Not bad really.  Lots of restaurants down that way.  We also walked up to a CVS that was also only about 15 minutes away.
