Codder1 Posted November 4, 2019 #1 Share Posted November 4, 2019 Two mid-60ish new cruisers that love scenery but get seasick easily. So, looking for best time of year to do a Norway Fjords cruise but hopefully have calmest waters. And does size of ship matter? Thx!
CruiserBruce Posted November 4, 2019 #2 Share Posted November 4, 2019 The seas can be rough any time, any where. Mother Nature always has the final say. You just have to be prepared. The size of the ship doesn't matter much. That being said, waters in the fjords will be generally calm. Its getting to the fjords that may not. jocap Posted November 4, 2019 #3 Share Posted November 4, 2019 As CruiserBruce says, it's the getting there which could be rough... we leave from Newcastle, so crossing the North Sea takes less time than from Southampton.
swaddy Posted November 5, 2019 #4 Share Posted November 5, 2019 Smaller boats can get round the fjords better. Fred Olsen are a Norwegian company who have good itineraries. Spring give snow melt and abundant waterfalls, June gives .midnight sun, October and March for the Northern lights. All are good.

For Norwegian fjords the itinerary is important - research the ports and scenic sailings. Just note that new emission regulation has been introduced for sailing the Norwegian fjords and many cruise lines are changing published itineraries- primarily for Flåm and Geiranger. June and July will be the best months, however the sea along a Norwegian west coast can still be rough - a cruise starting in Copenhagen might be better to avoid crossing the North Sea. WatchHill Posted November 5, 2019 #6 Share Posted November 5, 2019 We did a 14 night Summer Solstice cruise with Princess - three night of "no sun set" when over the Arctic Circle. The fjords were spectacular, very calm waters. However the seas can get a bit choppy if a weather front comes in, but you are generally close to land throughout the trip - but then I've had to sail across Buzzards Bay to Falmouth a few times when I couldn't get back up river toward Wareham due to weather conditions. We began the cruise out of Southampton, North Sea was quite calm during our cruise. Darcy
