Ketchikan or Sitka?

Recommended Posts

We are suppose to be sailing to Alaska this August. If it is cancelled we are looking at the following itineraries:

Itinerary 1 - Sitka, Skagway and Juneau

Itinerary 2 - Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau.

Which would you prefer ?

For the past 20 years, until I retired, I used to fly to all these villages to work. Sometimes fly in/fly out same day. Sometimes, I might have stayed a week or so.

I'd recommend itinerary 2.

Ketchikan is a beautiful community, small, but has a big time feel. Lots of history. Lots of fishing, timber, and native American art.

Juneau. The big city in Southeast AK. The capital of AK. Mendenhall Glacier. Gold mines. History. Red Dog Saloon.

Skagway - You could walk the entire village in 30 minutes probably. Sits at the tip of a bay and surrounded by huge mountains.. I had to fly into Skagway. Fly to Juneau first, then a small float plane up to Skagway. The fuel tank lever broke in mid flight. We had to sit down in the bay outside of Haines. A boat had to come out and tow us into Haines. Thank goodness it was a float plane.

Sitka is a small combination of all the others.
