getting older slowly Posted September 21, 2020 #2602 Share Posted September 21, 2020 The Olmec colossal heads are stone representations of human heads sculpted from large basalt boulders. They range in height from 1.17 to 3.4 metres. The heads date from at least 900 BC and are a distinctive feature of the Olmec civilization of ancient Mesoamerica..... Isn't the net wonderful.... Know the digging begins..... Definitely Mexico, though not so much jungle anymore. It was interesting to see what the site looked like when the archaeologists first found it. With all the factory vents the area has certainly industrialised since then😜

Cheers Don The heads are huge. Taller than me😳 We actually visited two sites but the one pictured is the only city ruins (that mound is actually a pyramid) tourists can visit. The other site the palace location is kept secret to protect it. However there is a little museum in town with a head, jaguar sculptures and some stelles. Don Excellent research🤗! I know it is not as visually spectacular as other Mesoamerican ruins but there is something pretty special to be standing on the oldest pyramid of the Americas😉. Cheers Don They say the earliest date for the Olmec civilisations is the same as the rise of ancient Greece, so if the heads could talk the stories they could tell😉. I have to admit when we were planning our Mexico trip it was one of my goals to see at least one Olmec head on the trip. I managed to get four which was great and the pyramid was a fabulous bonus🤗. The lighthouse built 1861 is the tallest in Australia at 48m. but there is some dispute about being the tallest in the Southern hemisphere. as the one in Madagascar Nosy Alañaña Light built 1932 is 60m The Place Cape Wickham is the site of Australia’s largest maritime disaster, With the wrecking of the Cataraqui with losses of 402 lives in 1845. Thus ends the history lesson Cheers Don

Rare MicCanberra Posted September 21, 2020 #2622 Share Posted September 21, 2020 Montpelier, Vermont, USA. A beautiful place, especially in the autumn. It is the capital so that is why they have the domed building. The spelling is different to the french version as the Americans tend to spell things the way they want to.
