A tip I learned from a guide at Ephesus (been twice now - amazing), was to bring a spare bottler of water to splash over the mosaics. It really brings out the tile colours for a photos.

May be some time before anyone can get back there.

 When we where there we need the water to drink, it was hot

It was hot for us too but we always carry plenty of water, that's why the guide encouraged us to take extra.

It was about five years between visits  2013/2018 (land tours not cruises) and it was amazing the see the amount of restoration done during that time and new excavations still being done.

The mosaics we were wetting and photographing  were on ancient, outdoor footpaths exposed to the weather.

I don't think I would allow it if I was a curator of the site after all you are trusting the public is only using water. Out of curiosity I did do a google of the mosaic footpaths as I have never been to a site that allowed such hands on access to mosaics and it seems they are all fenced off now. Maybe someone did splash something other than water😜
