Well, a beautiful autumn Saturday morning in Williamstown. Of course, being Melbourne weather, it is now cold and raining.

On my stroll a visited Fearon Researve. On adjacent fields there was lacrosse and Australian Rules

Football being played.

On Sunday, the family gathered at the only restaurant within 50 miles that had reservations available for a party of 10 as of a month ago when Daughter Kassi made them. Lesson learned. Located on a hillside overlooking the valley, the place was nice. The price was high and the food and service, while decent, illustrated why some venues automatically add a gratuity. Long story as to why we went to a restaurant rather than put on one of our own family-famous brunches but the bottom line is that Kassi did a great job arranging a family gathering that didn’t require days of preparation and hours of cleanup afterwards. All of our local core family was there and it was a very nice couple of hours of chatter and laughter. All in all, a lovely time was had. Yay, Family!

Hot and humid wetlands of Florida again!  Here's the selection from this Saturday:

Red-bellied woodpecker in its newly constructed home:

The significantly larger male pileated woodpecker - about 3x the size of the red-bellied:

Black-crowned night heron hanging out down by the water:

Bee going to town on the pickerel flower:

Double-crested cormorant showing off that beautiful Caribbean-sea eye:

George is the biggest, oldest alligator in this wetland...and each breeding season, the female alligators actually court HIM, rather than the other way around.  He gets his pick of females and several times in the last week there have been two or three smaller females surrounding him, trying to get his attention.  Well he appeared to have made his choice this weekend, saddling up next to this smaller female on the levee:

Some may remember I posted this shot about a month ago, of three green heron chicks in their nest, all freshly hatched:

Well, one month later, here's what the three chicks look like:

They've almost got the adult colors, but still are a little smaller, and still have bits of peach-fuzz feathers on their heads and backs.  But they seem to have been fairly lucky, with all three surviving - that doesn't always happen in the bird world!  Mom picked a good, safe spot for her nest this time.
