My travel partner broke arm 5 days before cruise. What now?

My sister and I were set to take a cruise out of Galveston leaving on Saturday. Then today she broke her arm. Ouch!!

It appears clear that she will not be able to cruise. She went to an emergency clinic today for initial treatment, but has to see an orthopedic specialist to determine next steps. Aside from our concern about her recovery, we are trying to figure out next steps regarding the cruise.

Can I substitute another person on this booking? Like remove my sister from the booking, and add my husband? Or, can I remove her and sail solo? My husband is still trying to figure out if he might be able to take time off work at last minute. Or, I might do a solo cruise. We had a very attractive rate on this cruise -- most of the cost is taxes and fees. I presume those will be refunded if we cannot cruise, right?

We just purchased insurance a couple of weeks ago, from an outside provider. Would this situation likely be covered if we cancel entirely?

This is the first time I've ever had a situation like this, so appreciate any help.

So sorry to hear this. Yes you can sub someone so as long as its more than 24 hours before sailing. Another option is you can checkin yourself and have your partner call up Carnival before February 15th and tell them that she is not comfortable sailing due to the COVID protocols. They are extending the refunds to February 15th and she should be able to get a FCC.

If you want to travel together you can both cancel before February 15th and get your FCCs and apply it to a new crusie that you both want to do.

Did the doctor actually say not to cruise, or was that only an assumption? Cruising really isn’t any more active than just staying home.

This too however there is a chance that you can slip and fall and injure yourself further, some travel insurances do not cover a pre existing condition or have a look back period of 3 months

My Grandmother was scheduled to go to Mexico and she broke her wrist and cancelled Flying can pose a risk of compartmentalization syndrome.

Until her sister sees he orthopedic specialist, they don't know what is next.  It could be surgery.

Insurance could be of some help.

First thing to do is call the broker or the company who sold you the policy and get their input.

At the least, you going to have to get something in writing from her doctor stateing that she absolutely cannot go on her cruise.

You will need to read your insurance coverage to know what is covered and what is not.

Tip:   If you highlight the part of someones message that you want to quote it will come up with "quote selection".   Use that and then people will know who you are quoting.

Cheers.

I would wait to see what the orthopedic surgeon says.

My tip is to call their office. Let the front desk know that you are willing to take the first cancellation available. That way, you can be seen sooner and you can get the assessment and plan much sooner. Tons of people no show and there are lots of last minute cancellations.

If you bought the insurance two weeks ago and the accident just happened, it should be covered if the doctor orders her not to go. It would reimburse her cost for travel and the up charge for you to sail solo. You are likely covered for cancellation as well but check with the company before you decide how to handle this.

Post #2 from travelplus gave you some options for FCC instead.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I appreciate the help.

I'm 99% certain that she is not going to want to cruise this soon after the injury even if the doctor clears her. I think she is not going to want to deal with learning to shower, dress, etc with a cast, without her husband to help her. Plus there is the issue of carrying luggage that someone mentioned. I'm not sure if I could manage to haul everything for both of us. She's in a lot of pain right now and unsure how well controlled that will be by this weekend. She doesn't want to cruise if she's on pain meds. She was able to get in with a doctor on an emergency basis, has an appointment this afternoon.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to talk my husband into taking her place. He's a little worried about taking off work, but you only live once, right?

So we know that I can change the traveler with the cruise line. Does anyone know how that might work with the insurance company? Can I change the insured person? I know that can vary depending on the insurance provider, and I'll call them once I know for sure who is going and who is not. Just wondering if anyone knows generally how that might work.

Thanks again for all the advice.

I'm glad she's able to get the care that she needs

Call up Carnival and your insurance company.

Some fares there is a small fee to change names. ..might not be free. Like $50

Or go solo and have her be a no show. Just go. Her fees and taxes will be refunded to the form of payment after the cruise.

Recently,  I had this conversation with customer service from Insuremytrip -through whom I bought my travel insurance- because I was replacing my husband's (can't go since he won't get vaccinated) spot with my daughter's friend. I was told I could not add a new person to an existing policy.  I could cancel the policy,  ask for a refund (might or might not be awarded by the carrier), and purchase a whole new policy  or I could keep the policy I have and just buy a policy for the new passenger.

Gather up the documents, call Carnival and share the details with them. That gives you the potential option of changing to another cruise.

We changed our Alaska cruise three times over the past three years by sharing the details of our events relating to family (my knee surgery) and Covid impacting cruises that stop in Canada.

I'd assume the sister breaking an arm would be something covered by insurance. I'd ask the agent if they want to write a check for the cost of the trip or change a name. May not work, but it's worth a shot.

Interesting. I wish I had seen this sooner. I called Insuremytrip 2 days ago and told them I was replacing the second passenger with a different person. Like you, they told me I can't put a new person on an existing policy. But that was it. They gave no other options, including the cancel and ask for a refund that you mentioned. The rep just told me I had to purchase a new policy for my husband. So we are just out the money that my sister paid for her half of our policy. 😞 We board the ship in the morning, and I've already purchased a new policy for my husband, so it's a moot point now.

We didn't really want to switch to a different cruise. We got an extremely low fare on this cruise. That's the whole reason we were going at this particular time. It's all worked out. My husband is joining me and maybe my sister will be able to go sometime in the future if another deal comes along.

Thanks everyone.
