What do most people wear on formal nights?  It has been several years since we have cruised on Carnival.  Last time we cruised most women didn’t wear formal gowns.

It's a mixture of casual and elegant, that's what it's called now. With the percentages leaning toward casual.

There were a handful of people who wore gowns and suits, but most were more business casual on Horizon a couple weeks ago. This was my first cruise I didn't bring my suit. Instead, I wore slacks with a button down dress shirt, no tie.

It is not really formal, it is cruise elegant which as other stated means folks wear a variety of things. It is a personal choice. My family trends to dress up more on a winter cruise while on summer cruises we go fairly causal but within the dress code.

We are currently on Mardi Gras but have recently been on other ships (3 and 4 night sailings), and we have seen a good mix. Some more casual (but still nicely dressed) while others dressed very elegantly and taking portraits. This is one thing I love about Carnival - do what makes you comfortable.

I just got off a four day cruise on Spirit.  I was surprised to see a few tuxes, as well as suits.  Women tend to dress fancier than their men.  There were women in cocktail wear even on the first night.  EM

Maître d' on the Breeze in November "tomorrow night is Cruise Elegant, "wear pants." That is the norm for more than a decade. I've sailed since the Mardi Gras in 1976 and haven't worn a tie since 2004. I don't carry a sport coat, suit, tux or dress shoes.

The most common attire I see for men is khakis or some other kind of slacks and a polo, Tommy Bahama type shirt or long sleeve shirt. As others have said you will see a few in suits, and perhaps one or two tuxedos.
For every other night I wear golf shorts and a polo with sandals or boat shoes.

When you have a Hairy Chest Contest and people raising their drink concoctions in coconut monkey drink holders don't expect a wedding reception formal event a few hours later. Your mileage may vary.

We dress up every night. On regular nights, my husband wears dress pants & polos. On formal night, he wears his suit. I wear sparkly stuff , sundresses, 'work' capris with fancier tops on regular nights and a either a cocktail type dress on formal night or I have a pair of chiffon wide leg pants and a fully beaded top.

When the kids sailed (high school & college) they dressed the same as us. Daughter bought homecoming style dresses on clearance at Dillard's for like $15. Whole section in our closet just for cruise clothes.
