Do you need to buy tickets in advance, and do they have time slots?

I've seen multiple people recommend to NOT purchase in advance. If it is cloudy...you won't be able to see much if anything at all. I am following that advice and will decide day of if we will go up or not. If you do purchase it, it is an all day pass so no specific time slots. It may have a time depending on your cruise line if you pre-purchase, but you would be able to go up when it works for you.

Do not buy in advance! You can walk right up to the counter and buy your ticket when you are ready to go up. And your ticket is good for use all day long. That way you can go up and return, then go up again when you remember that you forgot to buy a souvenir at the shop at the top.

We've done the Mt. Roberts tram a number of times including last June.  There is no need to pre-purchase a ticket.  This is an activity which is great on a sunny clear day but you don't want to pre-purchase and find that the day is cloudy or rainy.  There are no time slots, and while the line to purchase tickets may appear long the trams are large enough that the line will move quickly.

Adding to this, the last time we did it we purchased our tickets from our cruise ship excursion desk (Holland America) as they offered the same or slightly less price AND we were able to get a full refund if we decided not to go, even at the last minute.  Very convenient and safe from bad weather day.

Same policy on Discovery Princess…full refund if you decide not to go…but be sure to hold on to your ticket for them to process your refund.

On Norwegian, absolutely book Mt Roberts in advance for one person.  The reason being, if you're Free At Sea, it's free.  But the free tickets can sell out.  Then when you dock in Juneau, you can make a day-of decision whether to buy tickets for the others in your party.  

 

Note that your odds of good visibility up top generally improve the later in the day you go.

True visibility at the top maybe better later in the day - the low overcast visibility at ground level

should not deter one from going on the Tram. At ground level (or even viewing from a ship deck)

look for the cable tram rigging and the tram cars going up and own (as one goes up the other is

counter balanced and comes down) if you can't see this AT ALL consider a different time to ride.

Remember your ticket is an all day ticket - - -

Having multiple cruise ships in port may make it a challenge to ride without a wait - - -

If the lines to ride are out the door - plan on two or more cycles to accommodate

that number of riders - at least a half hour wait ?

Don't wait to ride the last ride down when you cruise ship has sounded its departure horn -

This is serious if your ship is at one of the remote away docks/piers i.e. AJ Dock.

 

But never the less the ride and view regardless of weather is amazing and really worth it -

If offered as a combo deal with another excursion i.e. Mendenhall & Tram check out the

value in that - - - Don't quibble over the few dollar difference between advance purchase

and other methods of timely purchase - perhaps the best way is buy the ticket when you

are ready to ride !

 

Plan on at least two ride cycles while at the top - more for the hiking excursions.

On Norwegian's Free-at-Sea deal, it's not a few dollars' difference.   You get 1 free ticket to Mt Roberts if you reserve in advance, and that is not conditional upon you buying a second.  I've been to Juneau like 8 or 9 times now, and not to say that it never happens, but I have never seen the fog set in midday.  Once it has cleared up, it has always remained clear for the rest of that day.   Although there is always Murphy's law.

Thanks, we're planning on going up regardless of the weather.  We missed it last time we were there.
