I know what I sent. You disputed the 2006 fire. I sent another example. Need more?

You didn't read my 107 post very well.  I said, I'll type slowly, "M A J O R" fire.  I'm sure there are thousands of small fires a year all around the world caused by cigarettes, in ash trays and dumpsters and so on but weren't considered "M A J O R".  And I didn't dispute the 2006 fire, I only said that the cause was reported as "LIKELY".  Which is not exactly a conformation, is it!

The one thing that I said of any certainty was that I don't think an industry should make policy based upon one issue.

And the hammer drop is, I said I was playing the "Devil's Advocate".  Which means that I don't necessary feel the way I posted the post.  Except where I said, "My personal feelings......

I don't need anything.  But, if you want to, knock yourself out.

I did read your post. You are setting parameters to what constitutes a major event. ANY fire on a cruise ship is a big deal. Your missing the point of the whole thread. So if you dont feel the way you post, are you just trolling?

Disagree.  While yes, I have at times found myself with a "lead foot" and going faster than I desire, I set my cruise control at 8-9mph over the limit.  That's an "intentional act".  So, since you say you use cruise control, do you set it at the speed limit or the 7-8mph over?

LOL, I guess my very  long response got deleted.  LOL

Short answer, No, I don't set my cruise over the limit, I set it at the speed limit.

I did read your post. You are setting parameters What parameters did I set? Are they mine or are they the maritime rules/laws/regulations/flag country/home port, who's,  I know I don't know, not for sure.  But, I'm sure that if any governmental agency is involved, there are many complicated regulations and law that say exactly what is considered minor or major or whatever.   to what constitutes a major event. ANY fire on a cruise ship is a big deal. Your missing the point of the whole thread.  No you refuse to accept that what I wrote is not necessarily what I believe.  I think if you really did read my post and digest it, in it's entirety, you'd understand what I was doing.

So if you dont feel the way you post, are you just trolling?  NO, as stated I was playing the "devil's advocate".  I was presenting another side of an issue, doesn't mean I feel the that the other side is correct.  It's just means that there is another side to an issue. BTW, if I was a troll, I'd have only 126 posts since 2013.

Obfuscate obfuscate obfuscate!  No, any fire on a cruise ship is not a major event, potentially, yes.  I bet they have flair-ups in the galley all the time even though they don't cook with flames, if there is no damage and no injury, it's not a major incident.  I've been on a Rustbucket cruise, I think it was the Dream, we were on the tour and just came from behind the stage when we could smell a lot of smoke, there was a small electrical fire behind the stage, we were told. The crew responded, put it out, nothing was ever reported as far as I could tell.  Hell, they didn't even cancel the show that night. The cruise went on as planned.  When we got back to home port, no media attention, no official vehicles when we got to the pier.  Nothing.

Just off quantum of the seas.  I can definitely attest that they do not enforce the no vaping (e cigs) in cabins.  My best friend and I shared a balcony room and she vaped the entire week in the room (not on the balcony or anywhere else).  I didn’t mind - I kind of like the very subtle smell.  No alarms went off or anything as the smoke deter was not set off by the very small amount of vape. AND the room attendant even saw her do it and he said as long as she doesn’t do it anywhere else like on the balcony shell be fine!!!!  So, if you have a low smoke, low smell vape you are more than likely going to be fine vaping in your cabin.  Discrete is the word tho. 🙂

We had folks thrown out of the AquaTheater on our December Symphony OTS cruise. They were vaping before the show and couldn't seem to stop even after being warned. The rules are for everyone and honestly you and your friend should have been warned and if the friend could not stop vaping, you two should have been removed from the ship at the next port.

Vaping is honestly worse than smoking in some regards when you look at the micro plastics in the materials that can be trapped in your lungs. Vape in the smoking sections of the ship or just don't bother cruising.

I smoked at home up and until I quit in 2008 I started in circa 1964.  My family, thankfully, suffers no ill effects. My parents smoked just like your adult family did.  So, did I except for the bed part.  I don't remember any fires though.  Lucky I guess.

Please keep in mind that I said that I don't remember knowing of any cigarettes causing a major fire on a cruise ship and "That doesn't mean that I'm saying there were none, I'm not a student of smoking on cruise ships".

But, you are probably right, there may be lots of incident of minor fires in cabins that were extinguished by the occupants or crew, little to no damage and not reported any higher than the hotel manager or reported to the ship's Captain but not reported any higher.  It wouldn't be great public relations if that info got off the ship and into the public realm

My mom smoked probably most of her life…..until she got lung cancer, which by the way she didn’t believe was caused from smoking.  I remember growing up when she would smoke in the bathroom, the ceiling got these dark brown spots for where water vapor mixed with the smoke. It was disgusting and many times I got on a ladder and washed the ceiling.

Unfortunately I DID suffer effects from her smoking my whole life. I’m left with ASTHMA, and I don’t want to be near any type of smoke, from cigarettes, car exhaust, vapes or any other type of “fume”

Wow! That should probably be posted on CC so all can see it. We'll be cruising to Cozumel in April on Serenade and I posted it there. Hey, maybe some of the suite cruisers will cancel and my RU bid will win!! One could only hope!

And maybe the ship will have less smokers one it....yeah, sigh...dream on.  😉

Lastly, in Australia vapes are prescribed on prescription (like my friend) and dispensed by a chemist for those seeking an aid for smoking cessation.  So my friend is under the care of her doctor and is actively trying to never smoke again which so far she has done and I for one support it.  If more cruise lines could see this and support Vapers like seabourn it can only be positive for everyone.

In the US we can also get “prescriptions” for medical marijuana, which is dispensed in many types of treatments, one of which is vaping. BUT they also dispense gummies which don’t affect anyone.

I’m not sure why your friend needs the prescription, but they still need to follow the rules of the ship, which is to vape in the areas designated for smoking. I don’t think it’s a ship’s responsibility to “support” Vaping. Maybe you will do better on Seabourn.

I’m not trying to be mean or nasty. I’m a realist.

I can place a recreational marijuana order online and pick it up a few miles away, in many forms, but that won’t help someone with a nicotine addiction.

I agree, but I don’t know what’s available for nicotine addiction in Australia. Here in the US from Ads I see there are patches and gum to gradually reduce the addiction. I don’t see ads showing vaping as a way to quit smoking though.

I would think that if someone really wants to quit the “habit”, that inhaling anything that resembles smoking in any way will take longer. They’re still smoking. It’s not eliminating the habit.

When I quit smoking, 2008, I used SNUS, a spitless chewing tobacco pod as an aid.  Yes, I do and did know that chewing/pod tobacco can be more harmful to your mouth.  But, my intent was to use it for a limited amount of time, just as a crutch and slowly cut back on the use of the harmful addictive and cancerous compounds.  It worked.  I used the SNUS for about a year and the rest is history.  I never picked up a cigarette after the day that I decided to quit.  And I haven't used SNUS since the day I though I had enough.  I got over the physical addition fairly quickly.  However, the desire or automatic reaction to reach for a cigarette during and after certain activities went on for years.  However, LOL, I still like being around cigarette smoke.  I spend a lot of time in the Casino.

I must admit though.  My old Army buddy and I did smoke a cigar (but, I did not inhale, sound familiar?) to celebrate something a few years ago.

I don’t know if you remember in the 80s/early90s when Marlboro had a thing where you could collect box tops or something and get free things with them.  My father-in-law was a two-pack-a-day smoker. He got us so much stuff.  Two really nice red lined barn jackets, nice flashlights, other stuff I can’t remember now. He was constantly bringing us stuff.

He died of Cancer 12 years ago. He had quit cold Turkey a few years earlier.

We both still have the barn jackets and they’re still pretty nice looking.  Just

the other day, my husband was walking the dogs and wearing his for the first time in years. I said, Your Dad killed himself for that jacket. And he said I’m never wearing this coat again. It’s a terrible addiction that most people who don’t smoke can never fully understand.

LOL!  Ya, my mom smoked Ralieghs. Their was a coupon on each pack.  My mom smoked about 4 packs a day.  She just about supplied our kitchen with cookware and utensils with those coupons.  And much more.  She was also into S&H Green stamps.  She died of Alz..

I still have the dartboard from my uncle and Raleighs in the 60s.  Think I got a couple mess kits too

Well I am simply suggesting that it’s happening anyway and my experience has been that it’s not being enforced on at least one ship/line.  The reason for it not being enforced because I think the cruise lines can’t be bothered taking harsh actions against someone for vaping in their private cabin - They would probably not win in a court and they know it 🙂

However I do promise that on our next upcoming cruise if we do get shunted off at some random port I will be sure to let everyone here know - but I cannot see that ever happening to be honest.  whilst some vapes are dodgy, made god knows where, and do have dubious ingredients and are illegal to supply in Australia -  Having a legitimate prescription by a doctor along with a device approved and dispensed by a pharmacist - it is not the same at all.  They need to be thought of and treated differently.

I would happily be a test case and actually kind of I hope I do get kicked off the cruise for simply being in a cabin where someone is using a device prescribed and supplied under Australian law by the same cruise line who doesn’t provide an alternate area except around smokers which is harmful to the success of a someone trying to stop smoking.  If that’s what it takes to bring light to the issue and have the rules formally reflect what is happening anyway - I’m happy to do it.   Im not sure id be so confident in other jurisdictions but can’t see any action being taken against us on a cruise operating round trip from Australia - will make for a great post though if it does tho I’m sure!!!  My friend is also planning on writing to the cruise line a head of time to advise of her situation with the supporting evidence and it will be very interesting to see what the response will be.  🙂
