Review of Cabin 5107 on Viking Sky Ocean Cruise Ship

Hello,

 

My wife and I will be cruising the "Iceland's Natural Beauty" trip this July 2023 on the Viking Sky.

We have a Deluxe Veranda 3 level cabin booked.  It is cabin number 5107 on deck level 5.

I would appreciate any reviews you have of this cabin if you have traveled on Viking Sky.

Also, any tips or suggestions you have for the trip and the ship would be helpful.

Pack lighter?  If there's one thing I'm not entirely satisfied with Viking's V & DV rooms, that'd be their lack of drawers.  At least Viking Sky had been fitted with 2 extra drawers inside the closet, for a total of 5 that you can use to unpack.  Still, the drawers are on the smaller side and shallow.  So pack lighter if you don't want to pull out your suitcases everyday.

DV3 5107 is a "standard" Viking cabin.  It is the same size and layout as the majority of cabins on Viking, but you have earlier embarkation, dining reservations, etc., etc.

 

As far as a review, I have been in this very cabin on all my Viking cruises but have never actually stayed in #5107 if that makes sense.  This cabin is 270 sq ft and the identical layout and furniture to the cabins I have stayed in.  Very comfortable.

 

As for the pack lighter comment, we don't pack light and we have never been without enough space to fully unpack.  Sometimes, what may normally go in a drawer may end up on a shelf, but for us it all fits.

 

The only thing that I can review that is different is that you are right at the aft, so you will get more motion if you have rough seas, but other than that, it is like all other cabins, very comfortable.  We prefer mid-ship to minimize motion, but some love to be aft and some love to be forward.

All DV cabins are treated alike. Shorex open 67 days prior to start date, dining reservations 60 days prior, whether you are a DV1 or a DV6. For details on cabin amenities by category click here and then scroll down; the information is the same for all of the ships.

Hi!  Thanks for the info.  What creates the difference in the DV's (or other categories) so that all the amenities are the same, but the prices are higher for the different DV levels?  For instance, there is $600 difference between DV6 and DV1 on a particular itinerary.  Is it only the location that creates the differences?  Or rooms with blocked views?  If we are looking at DV, for instance, why wouldn't we just want the lowest price category? All DV6s are on Deck 3; DV1s can be facing he back or on Decks 7 and 8. Other DVs are on other decks. It’s only location.

V deems higher level DV's as fore and aft, and higher up decks.  Experienced pax who want a more stable cabin location, prefer lower deck, midships.  V deems the latter as lower level, and priced DV's.

To answer your questions,  there are no blocked views to contend with in any cabin. 

 

The only reasons not to choose the least expensive cabin in a category are personal preference for a different location on the ship and availability.

As well as choosing excursions. Higher priced cabins get to choose excursions before DV and V.

We were in 4106 last December.  One deck lower and port side but should be very much the same.  The only "bad" thing we can say is that after two world cruises in midships cabins we found 4106 to be a lot of walking to get anywhere/  Especially the gym in the mornings.  Just us.

Very true but only an issue when you are choosing which category you want to book, say a PV vs a DV. When it comes to booking shorex it is only the letters (ES, PV, V, etc) that determine when you can book shorex.

 

OP's question was about choosing within a category, a 1 vs 2 vs 3-- and at that point, booking shorex does not come into the decision.

Sorry, that is what I was trying to say, DV and V, together,  choose last, after PV, PS, etc. Shouldn’t try to contribute before coffee…..

For clarity for other readers, the pecking order for booking shorex is as follows:

 

Owners' Suite (OS) -- 107 days out

Explorer Suite (ES1-3)) --- 97 days out

Penthouse Jr. Suite (PS1-3) -- 87 days out

Penthouse Veranda (PV1-3) -- 77 days days out

Deluxe Veranda (DV1-6) -- 67 days out

Veranda (V1-2) -- 60 days out

 

Only one third of the cabins are OS, ES, PS or PV.

Interesting! It is different for Great Lakes: DV and V are listed together (47 days out), NS and NP(57), OS and ES (67).

That is because Expeditions are a different division of the company -- and just another reason why it is time that Viking Expeditions should have its own forum and not be combined with Viking Oceans.  It is confusing for everyone.

We've only sailed once on Viking (Panama Canal) and were by the front elevators which was a smooth ride.  Curious how much vibration and/or movement you felt in 4106 - if any - as we may end up in that rear area (but on Deck 5) later this year.  Thx.

No vibration, no noise, very little motion.

Good to know! We're sailing in 5106 (other side of 5107) and concerned about disadvantages of location, i.e. absolute last room in that row, such as proximity to noisy engines or heaving. Walking distance not an issue. Other concern is storage capacity for luggage. Seems to be a difference of opinion on that one.
